hindsight is 20/20 but maybe selecting university presidents on their willingness to debase themselves for private donor money is related to the current difficulties in defending academia from fascism

Hatted Ravelry
Reminder that two of Ravelry's top patterns right now are melt the ice hat (knit) and melt the ice hat (crochet)
A reminder — there are *millions* of social sites on the internet, like Storygraph for your reading and Ravelry for your knitting, etc. It’s only the biggest, run by the extremist fascists, that do these terrible things. Don’t define the internet by a handful of apps run by 5 sociopaths.

Defenceless under the night
Our world in stupor lies;
Yet, dotted everywhere,
Ironic points of light
Flash out wherever the Just
Exchange their messages:
May I, composed like them
Of Eros and of dust,
Beleaguered by the same
Negation and despair,
Show an affirming flame.

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

Unfortunately it seems I cannot directly comment on this post, but were I to do so, I’d like to point out that this most recent wave of American tech hegemony has been baked into secretive binational trade agreements for years, trading sovereignty for access.

This is Minneapolis elementary school pick up:

The alert also recommends: "Bring your whistle & wear your hat. If you have a respirator or goggles bring them in a small backpack. We don't want to show up looking alarming for the kids but chemical weapons are being used widely in the area."

Having some thoughts about the nature of my fears as a Canadian that I want to try to express in deep solidarity with everyone in Minnesota and elsewhere fighting our common enemy. This thread will not be in the "Canadian asshole" genre. (The opposite, I hope). Still, mute if you want.

In 2026 I want all of the decent people to remember one thing.

You aren’t meant to be this disciplined, this self-sacrificing to survive. The environment is supposed to support good living. We can have that. You are not a failure. That is politics.

That is all.
