kind of darkly funny that "gender studies" is the stereotypical "useless degree" because gender studies will help you understand a large and important chunk of the current psychosis in american life

What actually happened: capital plundered the former colonies throwing their societies into violence and chaos; the refugees were welcomed as cheap labor by their former imperial overlords; those refugees were then scapegoated for social problems
Eyes wide open, folks. They're revealing the supervillain plot.

There seems to be basic historical illiteracy everywhere, and it's especially obvious in the press. The emphasis on CS, STEM and "career readiness" we've seen in public school the past decades is coming home to roost.
So many in media are ill-equipped to interview officials about what’s happening because they begin with the presumption of legitimacy and don’t know enough about history or U.S. foreign policy to foment intelligent pushback and hold officials accountable.

Can you imagine if school districts adopted, I dunno, some classroom electrical system, that then regularly killed multiple kids, and when asked to pull the systems, districts were like, the benefits outweigh the harms, it's the future, chill out everyone.

That is what's happening here.
OpenAI is now facing a total of 8 wrongful death lawsuits from grieving families....who claim that ChatGPT, in particular, the GPT-4o version, drove their loved ones to suicide. Soelberg’s complaint also alleges that company executives knew the chatbot was defective before it pushed it to the public
He put his complete trust in a chat bot that turned him into a savage murderer.

Honestly, can any interview actually call out the blatant misinterpretation of the Monroe Doctrine? Our job as history teachers is hard enough as it is.

Things don't have purposes, as if the universe were a machine, where every part has a useful function. What's the function of a galaxy? I don't know if our life has a purpose and I don't see that it matters. What does matter is that we're a part.

shout out to all the teachers out there who, tomorrow, have to explain an inane and rapidly developing international crisis to teenagers with several teaspoons of information

My whole life, advocating war has been fed to me as “the adult position,” akin to drinking your coffee black or reading the business section of the newspaper. Let’s be very clear — war is the childish nonsense of impulsive destructive idiots playing baby-brained video games with real human lives.

the thing about being a high school teacher who keeps in touch with former students is that you may be receiving texts right now from kids scared of the draft being reinstated

I spent a summer in Chavez's Venezuela in the early 2000s, and I very much doubt trump and co have any idea how much Simon Bolivar and his ideas mean to the people of VZ.

It's VERY important to call reps in red districts re: Venezeula. Trump is far weaker than he was 6 months ago and we've seen many cracks in GOP solidarity. Attacking Venezuela was only polling at 25% WITHOUT the illegal surprise aspect. Script below, use @resist.bot or @5calls.org

Excellent thread from one of the best scholars of US FP, and FPDM in general.

Trump’s actions in Venezuela and Iran didn’t surprise me, but I think it’s because I study FP in a case with a longer history of authoritarian populist leadership than the US has. But I also can’t say I predicted this.
Some thoughts on what Trump has done in Venezuela and what it might mean for US national security. Caveat: not a Latin America scholar so this is focused on US policy. Clearly huge consequences for Venezuela that others can address.

First, despite the buildup, I didn't think Trump would do it.

Can't help but feel like this is one of the reasons why the Constitution says If a dude in office does an insurrection, don't let that motherfucker hold office again

Bc clearly they cannot be trusted with power & control over the levers of government, & they do not care about democratic constraints
