This is absurdly bad PR. These are the images that need amplified. If you're online, think strategically about which images need to go viral to tell the story of the horrors of this moment. RT and share the shit out of them.

An interesting range of interpretations here but what jumps out at me most is that sharp economic downturns seem to be associated, with some lag, with the far-right cannibalizing the center-right and thereby threatening democratic systems.

Some implications, perhaps, for democratic system design.
In our - very limited - historical experience of democracy,

(i) states rot from the centre-right
(ii) and it's contagious (via geography/powerful exemplar states)

This is funnily enough how a lot of IR commentators treat Russia
i think the key to understanding a lot of establishment discourse is that basically only the left and liberals are capable of being viewed as subjects capable of judgement which is why GOP rule is essentially treated as a force of nature
The media trots out the "deplorable" comment from a decade ago to castigate the left. Once a week now Trump implies that the military should destroy democrats, and it is just how things are.

they're not just fucking with the rule of law and the functioning of our democratic system, they're also undermining the basic compact of our federal union
In one sense, this is the Admin recklessly undermining basic norms of liberal democracy.

In another sense, this is the sweatiest flailing around since Giuliani was giving conferences outside a landscaping shop. It's just blindly groping around for any lever of power, regardless of how dumb it is.

Yeah DHS has got to be repealed and replaced, which would actually be a great opportunity for some wider restructuring of American domestic security infra

Is this also a thing for non-Infantry officers as well? Like what's the point of sending Armour and Arty guys to Ranger school, what's the utility in making leaders of men and machines individually subjected to harsh light infantry training when that's just like, never going to be their job?

No, because there's a pretty even distribution between line officers from aviation, surface warfare, and subs getting senior command

They have some whole nother structural issues, but this isn't one of them

the truth is that Pritzker has power because the cops technically answer to him and he's understandably anxious about what happens if that's suddenly not the case.

I second this, with the extra layer that there should probably be a bit more territory this happens to, and this policy should apply to China and any of their other crony’s as well. (Though I do wonder, who will Koenigsberg go to/what will happen to it after the war)?
If the Russians kick this off, they should lose Kaliningrad. I know this war that is meant to end the idea that one can redraw Europe's borders by blood and force. But they opened this can of worms, and I am increasingly no longer opposed to shoving the contents of that can down their throats.

@boxelderdust.bsky.social weird observations I had, but both astronaut’s and SOF personnel are similarly depicted in media as alternating between triumphant awesome successes and catastrophic failures that result in casualties treated as normal for the job that really shouldn’t be.
