Gotta say, it’s a hard time to be a historian of medicine whose focus was pre-antiseptic / pre-vaccine era.
Can’t believe the whole country has to suffer through the return of Dickensian childhood diseases because the worst, most ignorant attention-demanders decided other people’s expertise makes them feel bad

You need to say it with me: These are snitch boxes, I will not snitch in these boxes.
Apparently P*ypal now asks for customer opinions on accounts sending invoices.
If you are paying an invoice to a nsfw artist, do NOT mention NSFW in any way, keep it blank even. you risk both your account and the artists.

I really hate it when scientists keep saying that “we need to rebuild trust in science,” because it implies that scientists are to blame for the mistrust rather than the millions of dollars of dark money that have funded political attacks on science in order to advance a far right agenda.

My hope would be that the people get the real help that they need but...yeah...not optimistic about that.
We've already seen AI driving people to psychosis, but man, what happens to these people if/when the bubble pops. Not just to the economy but also, just, to these people's brains, what happens If AI stops being available or just stops being cheap/free to use

There's a false dichotomy of having to choose between being bold or being practical but still very interesting. Looking at the leadership numbers it also seems like McPherson, Ashton and Lewis could win.
New polling suggests potential NDP members are split on where they want the party to go

Meanwhile, McPherson and Ashton lead Lewis in generating excitement among the party's base

Many Canadians remain open to voting for the party, if the right leader is chosen

I have a new conspiracy theory. The Liberals have pushed all budgets to November to discourage opposition parties voting non confidence because Canadians hate winter elections.

very irritating whenever anyone acts like a relative handful of incel nazi internet dwellers are representative of an entire generation. in reality when that generation see a more left-wing option on offer they flock to it
The Greens are winning the support of around half of 18 to 24 year olds.

Reform are on 5%. So much for young people's turn to the right!

And the Young Greens now have 40,000 members - the biggest youth and students wing in British politics

A flamingo named Frankie recently escaped a British wildlife sanctuary and has been spotted in Northern France.

Frankie flew the 172 miles despite her clipped wings.

FWIW, here’s how far that is.

Donald Trump could have just kept his mouth shut about Jamal Khashoggi.

But to smear a dead journalist, while sitting with the person accused of orchestrating his murder is just vile.

Every time this administration hits rock bottom, a trap door seems to open.

Cretin behavior.

Trump’s comments are vile. I am just as angry at the media outlets that bothsided Jamal’s murder, wrote puff pieces for MBS (Atlantic).

And, the Washington Post opinion page that dismantled the platform that Jamal wrote for, ended the fellowship in his name, and purged its human rights writers.

The current UK government, I have long felt, is what the geniuses like Ezra Klein and Adam Jentleson are demanding the Democrats be like. Good idea.

Kind of feels like the IOC expected for the study to say "yeah trans women are like the hulk somehow" and when it completely undercut the reasoning behind banning us. They have simply elected to ignore their own work.

it is almost as if accommodating and conceding to far right ideas legitimizes them and signals to voters that the far right is a legitimate choice for governance
The Danish Social Democrats are currently on course for their worst election result since at least the Second World War, despite their brand of far-right accommodationism being touted as a blueprint for other centre-left parties.

yeah that's the thing. trump is normal for folks born in the early 2000s. he's been the most important person alive for much of their lives, the center of the universe.
Worth noting that for a lot of zoomers, the "Trump isn't normal" language that was trotted out is just plainly not true for them and so I think it just kind of didn't work, but now a lot of them are experiencing Trump for the first time as adults with bills and obligations and they've had enough.

Alternatives to NY Times Games & Puzzles 🧵

If it bothers you that your passive games subscription and clicks to the NYT Games cartel is funding their awful OpEd army and "journalism," there are a wealth of puzzle/game options less iffy/yikes complicit, and many are direct clones to your NYT faves.
