I wrote about the cronyistic TikTok deal, and how it once again shows the U.S. is too corrupt to function in the public interest, despite a whole lot of pretense to the contrary
TikTok Deal Done And It’s Somehow The Shittiest Possible Outcome, Making Everything Worse
There were rumblings about this for a while, but it looks like the Trump TikTok deal is done, and it’s somehow the worst of all possible outcomes, amazingly making all of the biggest criticis…

The endgame here is getting the Supreme Court to declare that the entire civil service system is unconstitutional. Which is to say, this administration does not want us to be a modern, efficient, globally competitive nation-state.

WOW. @haleaziz.bsky.social with a new scoop: ICE now gets a running list of every person who is going to be taking a domestic flight inside the United States from the TSA and runs it through their database looking for targets. This explains the Babson College student's arrest.

I distinctly hope that the judges, the lawyers, the bureaucrats, the people who do this will never see heaven. I hope their guilt devours them, because if they do this and just go home and forget about it, they're monsters.
There is no sight that more efficiently puts the lie to immigration “court” than the common sight of children “representing themselves.” Children too small to climb into the chair, children in pajamas who don’t know where they are, children not yet old enough to speak.

Paul Krugman only reads blogs and that is why he, unlike everyone else who has been in punditry for decades, has never lost his mind

Genuinely: this is a perfect encapuslation as to how Paul Krugman remains one of the most clear-eyed of his colleagues about events. He just looked at the Journalist Brain-Cooking Devices and Apps and said "that seems like a terrible idea, no thanks" and consequently he never suffered a digital TBI.

In this paper, I estimate* that if methane emissions from US natural gas infrastructure were a country, they'd be the 8th-highest greenhouse gas emitter in the world.

*Using methane's 100-year GWP and likely underestimating downstream emissions from electricity/industry/transport.
New paper. I wish this wasn't the case, but most progress on reducing US greenhouse gas emissions is likely spurious. Why? EPA underestimates methane emissions from oil and gas. Relevant today as Repubs vote to gut IRA's methane monitoring/mitigation program. 🧵

pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

IMPORTANT: The Dutch invest €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart governments do the math on investing in better mobility.

Let’s be clear— it wastes public money to NOT do it.
