Pairs nicely with this piece noting that deporting immigrants doesn't mean Americans get those jobs. It means more automation or more outsourcing of jobs to other countries.

It’s so odd to me that we’ve reached a point where making something shoddy is not only *not* a source of shame and embarrassment, but also something they double down on. Even more puzzling is the willful erosion of value (and the good name of one’s brand) in the online search function.
suggesting online search > using a medical AI chatbot may underestimate how many websites are now full of AI slop (not to mention how AI has permeated online search)
this is why people are comparing AI to microplastics or a virus—there are no uncontaminated parts of our info ecosystem.
"People are better off using online searches or their own judgement" is an unbelievably harsh indictment of AI chatbots

All union jobs
All American contractors
American steel

We have waited for this bridge for years because a greedy bastard blocked it at every turn

He is entirely wrong

The IRB protects human subjects, which is why we agree with its existence. But over time, intentions aside, it has morphed into a protection racket whereby charisma-free for-profit ghouls like Mr. Beast make bank with no restraint and marketing companies and Ring know (and sell) everything about us.

He is correct insofar as I am not on the tenure-track (and never will) and, due to my job's resultant precarity, I censor myself frequently so as not to upset the leaders at my university

With that said, I don't often see tenured faculty use their freedom and power to resist the status quo
Tenure enables freedom of speech, which is why aspiring tyrants don’t like it.
Breaking, from me: An executive order from Oklahoma's governor directs most of the state's public colleges to "phase out tenure." #AcademicSky #HigherEd @chronicle.com

It seems to me like every elected Democrat should be demanding as loudly as possible that Trump be impeached immediately for that racist Obamas-as-apes post. They barely even have to make a case. They’d demand anyone holding any job resign or be fired immediately for posting that at work

Fiction story where the hats deliver distinctive, enduring marks to the hands and/or head of all disingenuous persons grasping or wearing them, such that their status drops below that of even the leader’s known and sworn enemies.
Well, my fellow Maine voters. Here is Susan Collins today paying tribute to her boss while holding her MAGA hat.

Let’s say you met a smart woman with red hair and didn’t catch her name. You wanted to chat with her about work and collaboration. How to describe her? “Woman with red hair?“ “Smart woman?”

You do not refer to her as “the redhead.”

The blonde, the brunette…come on.
Here’s Duke behavioral economist Dan Ariely asking Jeffrey Epstein for “the name and email of the redhead that was here with you.” This is four years after Epstein’s 2008 conviction for procuring a child for prostitution.

All of this because a high Bobby Kennedy saw the endless repeats of the fictional 70s Brady Bunch episode where the kids were harmlessly laid up in bed with “measles,“ ringing bells/tooting horns to get service from poor Alice. When, in fact, vaccine-wise, a likelier 70s scenario was *chicken pox*.

One thing I’ve noticed about both Nigel Farage and the US president is that, when they speak, we disproportionately see their front bottom teeth, often to the exclusion of the top teeth. Do they train for this? I tried doing it on purpose and it was very difficult and made me look like a real uggo.
