VAN HOLLEN: Did you in fact make the visit to Epstein's private island?

LUTNICK: I did have lunch w/ him as I was on a boat going across on a family vacation. My wife was with me as were my 4 children and nannies. We had lunch on the island. That's true. For an hour. We left with all of my children

hard to think of a better example of "you may not believe in class war, but billionaires know they're in one" than this
This is bleak: Jes Staley, currently CEO of Barclays, reassuring Epstein that popular revolt against financial elites is unlikely because capitalism and pop culture have defanged social movements, leaving people more invested in consumption than justice.

Been thinking a bit about the way that John Brockman acted as Epstein's scientist collector and would organize dinners where Epstein would just happen to show up and I think a lesson here for *white scientists* is if you're being invited to all-white events, that might be actively intentional 🧪

They wrote their emails thinking they were never going to be caught.

They write their excuses because they are sorry they got caught.
The biggest privilege afforded to men in positions of power is that of being dumb.

There are people willing to accept the excuse that a world-class researcher neglected to do a 10-minute Google search on a sponsor, in the 2010s, as part of the process for accepting research funding.

the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women — and interactions with them — through the lens of sex

the speed at which these guys have broken everything has given a lot of folks who should know better the impression that they are an unstoppable force and the only option is to negotiate the terms of surrender

just because the clown car goes very fast does not mean it isn’t full of clowns
Whatever the immediate fallout of the scandal, what is going to stick around is the impression it gives, of hapless idiots doing ridiculous things. And I think that seriously reduces the appeal of capitulating to these jokers.

Same game that gold mining companies have been playing in South Africa for decades
What the New Mexico AG calls "a fraudulent scheme" by three oil execs to profit from hundreds of oil and gas wells and then dump the clean up costs on the state and its taxpayers is a pretty good microcosm of what the fossil fuel industry is doing to America (and the planet).
NEW: New Mexico’s lawsuit accuses three Texas oil executives of pocketing revenue from oil and gas wells and offloading cleanup costs to the public.

A 2024 ProPublica and @capitalandmain.bsky.social investigation uncovered some of their companies’ business dealings.

The first time I saw a rendering of The Line all I could think about was how many birds it would kill and how the vast majority of architects either don't give a damn about window kills or can't be bothered to learn about them
"The Line’s reflective surface and wind-turbine farm basically created a bird-slaughtering machine along one of the world’s most important migratory route"

Taking a break from the sickening tragedy to focus on the beauty for a moment. Rob Reiner achieved something so rare and coveted that artists and entertainers dream of and rarely achieve: cultural permanence. How many times have you made a reference to something going to 11? Shouted "Inconceivable"?

AI is like this giant fucking boat we all were forced to get on, and it's a boat they stole, and also it barely floats, and also it's not going anywhere good. So it either takes us somewhere we hate, or it fucking sinks, so either way, fuck AI.
So if AI succeeds loads of people lose their jobs as they're replaced by AI, and if AI fails, loads of people lose their jobs as the economy crashes?
It’s amazing how this story has gone from 0 to 60 in UK press. There’s been no mainstream coverage to date but this morning the story is leading BBC News site & bulletins.
