I'm Rob, I write a newsletter called Radical History (radicalhistory.substack.com), give talks on the same here in Portland, OR, and am the co-host of Dungeon Master of None, a TTRPG podcast about getting started running/playing in games (not an AP). In my day job I'm a lifeguard, which rules IMO.

I know we're through the looking glass on this but I am mad about AI "art" again. Our ancestors did not smear pigment on the cave walls at Lascaux in between hunting paleolithic megafauna so you could hand over your creativity to a machine! This is your human birthright!

Believe it or not, Frankenstein, it was the first novel that really made me think. This is probably unfair but I kind of believe I lacked interiority before reading it.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

They may be trying to destroy academia and literature and forcibly transition us into a post-literate society, but we will not go quietly. Thank you for your service @joycecaroloates.bsky.social 🫡

It doesn't matter at all but it is clear that Elon has *at best* skimmed the Wikipedia pages of the books he thinks he's supposed to know about as a sci-fi nerd, his understanding of them is worse than nothing

I've been playing the Outer Worlds 2 (good, I like it) but the game suffers a bit from capitalist satire being outflanked by reality, like what do you mean that Bill O'Reilly is shilling a product called "relaxium"
"We have a great product that really works. Now to find a spokesman and aesthetic that's synonymous with 'feeling and being chill.'"
