When I resigned as co-chair of the National Association of Black Journalists convention after their decision to platform Trump, I took a lot of heat for it.

I was told “Black journalists are going to expose his racism and save America”

Today, the Trump regime is arresting Black journalists.

Remember how Musk designed a submersible coffin that couldn't navigate a cave, accused a rescue diver of being "a pedo guy", and then based seemingly on that entire experience decided the world didn't need USAID? Stunned, stunned that he turned up in the latest Epstein files.

Words can’t describe how much I loved this novel — and how much I loved teaching it in my contemporary fiction class. It is an absolute masterpiece.
Sayaka Murata's 2016 Akutagawa winner, Convenience Store Woman, led the recent boom in translated Japanese fiction. Her stories dissect how society's expectations don't stand up to scrutiny. Her protagonists seem oddball, but she claims anxieties about "not being human enough" are "very normal".

Hard to overstate the resilience benefits of well-insulated and -sealed housing. A house like this can not only protect you and your family, it can let you become a hub of mutual aid for your neighbors. What a gift to be able to give.
The power went out and when he woke that morning in his Passive House, it was 9°F outside and 62°F inside.

"At our neighbor's house, which was identical to ours [before the Passive House retrofit], it was 36°F. They may as well have been living in a tent"

I know all eyes are on Minneapolis, but there's a fast-approaching nightmare in Springfield, Ohio.

Trump is revoking protected status for tens of thousands of Haitians living there on Feb. 3.

Reportedly, on Feb. 4, 1000 ICE agents are arriving to remove this population. Ethnic cleansing.

Great thread.
Just talked a student through the bitter disappointment of realizing they probably won’t be able toaccess state archives in India for their dissertation. Some thoughts on how to handle this. 1) as an Indian, I have been hustling my way into archives my whole career so relativize the experience.

Get them to question why institutions like the British Library had poured millions into digitization around the world but there is no western money for the more mundane but important task of cataloging. Why has Modi put so much money into digitization when metadata on Abhilekh Patal is such shit?

Make them think hard about who digitization really serves. Is it them, sitting pretty in western universities? Is it an authoritarian state that can use modern surveillance tools all the better to police the past and the communities who bear uncomfortable histories?

Archives are not only structured by past conjunctures of power. They are maintained by current ones too. If you do not treat your students to be sensitive to those dynamics you are not teaching them to be working historians.

I approached my work in Indian archives as an Indian national based on what I saw was possible in Brazil. What I observed in Indian archives was colonial extractive behavior from western scholars who were happy to pay 25euro a scan in European archives but would cheat Indian archives of Rs.25.
