A little bear figurine carved out of amber some 6,000 years ago 🐻❤️

A hole runs through the bear’s torso suggesting it was threaded on a cord, perhaps worn or carried as a protective charm.

Found in a peat bog near Słupsk, Poland, in 1887.

The bear's head is carved to show ears, mouth, nostrils and eyes. A hole runs through the bear’s torso, suggesting it was threaded onto a cord. Dimensions: Length 10.2 cm, Height 4.2 It was discovered in Słupsk during peat mining in 1887. According to the museum catalogue ‘’Shortly after its discovery, the figure underwent conservation work to restore its original appearance as it was covered with a layer of dull patina from the exposure to the minerals contained in the peat. Already at that time, at the end of the 19th century, it was assumed the restoration had gone too far. The figure was stripped entirely of patina, the anatomical features of the animal were emphasised, the eyes and nostrils were sharply drawn, and the amber was carefully polished”. In 2013, a competition was organised by the Education Department of the National Museum in Szczecin, for children to choose a name for the bear. The winning name was ‘Słupcio’,

She leads a small troop of others behind her as though prepared to destroy an unsuspecting village. Her body is full of indications of damage from previous battles and yet she still exists. They’re channeling nature magic into a protective cloak that trails away from her shoulders and arcs gracefully across the page. Borderland Scout A dark skinned Black woman sitting atop an antelope of some sort outfitted with a saddle and riding harness. The creature is standing atop a rocky outcropping as the woman looks off into the distance. A vast sky surrounds her giving the piece a feeling of openness and majesty as birds circle high in the sky around her. Oaths to keep Two figures stand on a rise overlooking a dense forest at sunset. The world is rendered in luscious oranges, pinks, reds and gold. The two figures, silhouetted in the foreground look into the distance where a large temple complex rises out of the forest canopy. They clearly have a distance to go but the destination is in sight.

A bit of poetry to teach children about the dangers of remnants like Mwindaji.
This bit of dark poetry came up while I was working on a write up tonight. “Step by step they come. Through the trees and over the hills, like a wicked scythe they come. To cut the villages down. Mile by mile they come. Past the ruins and up to the walls, like a ruinous tide they come. To cut the villages down. Led by Mwindaji they come. Screaming bronze swords in living form. No lights and no sound, don’t want to be found. Happy Groundhog Day! I am a fan of the absurdity of weather prognosticating rodents and celebrate Groundhog Day with my thermochromic linocut. The shadow is visible if the ambient temperature is <30°C and disappears when >30°C (and it’s a safe bet winter is over or you are overheating your home). 🧵
