Billionaires, who quite often do not see education as a common good, should not be guiding higher education policy.

“I kind of yearn,” Mr. Nassirian said, “for the gilded age when billionaires satisfied their extracurricular interests by collecting Fabergé eggs and prized ponies.”

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

I will not support a deal that does nothing to make health care more affordable.

We are in a health care emergency. A simple one-year extension of these tax credits would cost less than Donald Trump’s $40 billion bailout for Argentina.

A vote for this bill is a mistake.

Shutting down the government is a big deal. People have been hurt in big ways as a result of the decision. To have that suffering be for nothing—to re-open the government without actually having protected people’s health insurance and economic well-being—is unconscionable.

Democratic party leadership has been on autopilot for ten years, they weren't losing to fascism, fascism isn't popular enough for them to lose to fascism, they were allowing it to fill the void where their leadership should have been. Tonight we're seeing that we have other options. They should too.

Nine months ago I put most of my hope in major institutions continuing to hold fascism in check, but had little expectation that regular people with little to no power would step up and put themselves at risk.

I had it exactly backward.

With millions at risk of losing SNAP in the coming days, a reminder: hunger doesn't happen in isolation. When food assistance disappears, families use rent money to eat. Then come evictions and homelessness.

Housing, food, healthcare—it's all connected. Cut one thread and the whole thing unravels.

we are not having a lot of luck with institutional pushback - everyone who does is fired and replaced

we are definitely not having any luck with “norms”

what we are having luck with is ordinary people looking at the incompetent bullshit put in front of them and going “absolutely not”

This is false. For example, the libertarian @cato.org breaks down the numbers, showing about 6 deaths from right-wing politically motivated attackers for every 1 from left-wing attackers.
Moreover, the claim that shooters represent anyone other than an unhinged fraction of society is the deeper lie.

One thing I know about Minneapolis is we are NOT going to turn our backs on anyone because someone who committed violence potentially identified with that group. I know we are stronger than that. Hold your trans sisters and brothers close today. Call them, text, check in, stand by them.
The shooter (8/27 Annunciation) has been identified with a specific detail of her past singled out.

Do not fall for the trap.

We need to understand as a community that this detail being published in this manner is going to create an increased risk environment for our trans femme/ queer neighbors.
