agreed. on another note i think the reply guy saying YIMBY vs. NIMBY "plays into the interests of the right" is very funny when actually existing republicans hate apartment buildings, don't want any to be built, and think driving 50 miles each way to work from an exurban mcmansion is cool and good

It's not an analogue but this image of European friars burning indigenous (Maya and Aztec I think) books and cultural objects (c. 1585) feels like one of the reference points for whatever is unfolding.

one of the most hilarious* things about america and its preoccupation of being The Most Freedom Country is that it has an unprecedented surveillance network that is trivially available to government that government didn't even have to pay for, it tricked its citizens/residents into buying it
“Safety experts and tech critics have long condemned the Ring devices for security risks and privacy violations, not to mention their role in building the largest civilian surveillance network in US history.”

The only people there to disabuse them of this are the actual mil people there who know better, but in a more degraded US political environment there is a serious risk of chud hubris just assuming their foes will give up and it gets us into a serious conflict.
There's always been fantasies on forums and on 4chan about killing 'weak libs' in cities in a civil war, as well as killing the 'weak and gay' coalition troops coming to support the 'woke US government' which I'm sure has carried onto to current staffers.

If she loses? Guess living where you're running does matter

it’s been a decade of this and somehow nobody has figured out that trump is the most beatable man alive. he folds the instant you show him a mirror. just do what he does at you back at him and he crumples instantly!!
Trump is fundamentally a coward, he is happy to use military force but only if it's a mugging from behind and not a straight up fight
I don't think Greenland fascination is 'fake' in any way, but I do think Trump is uniquely and correctly loathe to involve actual US troops in whatever it is he's doing, and until I see some reporting on troop buildup or standing orders I'm going to treat it as bluster, but our allies markedly can't

The Interior Department said pausing construction of offshore wind farms would allow the government agencies to work with project developers to mitigate potential risks. But wind companies say the adm...

Historians, especially Eurocentric ones or those who employ methodological nationalism, often elide this or elude it by focusing on the fact that Ashkenazim were numerically superior. But that was a pretty recent state of affairs in the 1800s and the Ottoman state would have had no reason to know it

TIL: in the 1890s, from the Ottoman perspective, “Jew” meant what they then called “Sephardi.”

They had one population registry for “Jews” and another one for “Ashkenazim.”

When Ashkenazim learned of this they experienced it as disorienting. One compared it to being seen as Samaritan
