This. There was a lot of "nudge nudge wink wink" going on among enthusiast anime press circles. We all knew like 80% of the folks we were dealing with were watching fansubs on some level. Even so, you had to keep the dance going and keep that on the DL because it was unseemly to talk openly about it
Back when I wrote & modded for ToonZone, we had to go out of our way to not talk about how we watched/read unlicensed content, even though the publishers would admit to the same means off the record. Mass theft for AI model training makes that whole kayfabe seem silly in hindsight.
