Tower Beach, 1951. (Photo courtesy of @ThamesBaths) At a recent mudlarking exhibition a gent came to my table and told me he remembered coming down here regularly in the 1950s with his parents to sunbathe & swim. The Tower Foreshore is now out of bounds and the state of river water is shocking.

Sometimes I still can't get over the fact that 'to bite the dust' is literally a Homeric metaphor, e.g. Il. 24.738 Ἕκτορος ἐν παλάμηισιν ὀδὰξ ἕλον ἄσπετον οὖδας "They bit the dust (lit. 'seized the ground by the teeth') at the hands of Hector".
