2026: the tactic of appealing to moral hypocrisy is dead and buried. EU leaders wishing to be seen as ahypocrital have a problem but those unmasked and lauding their consistently brutal and do not .

In Baaydhabo, in Somalia’s South West State, demonstrators described the move as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty, waving national flags and chanting anti-Israel slogans. Similar protests were held in Hobyo in the central Mudug region, where marchers denounced the recognition as a threat to Somalia’s territorial integrity. In Xudur, the capital of Bakool Region, protesters called Israel’s decision an open interference in Somalia’s independence and national sovereignty. Crowds in Guriceel, in Galmudug State, and in Laascaanood also held large demonstrations rejecting the move. Across the country, protesters carried signs, chanted slogans calling for national unity, and urged the international community to uphold Somalia’s territorial integrity. Participants said Israel’s recognition of Somaliland violates international law and demanded it be revoked. Foreign Minister Jean-Marie Karamoko Traoré said Tuesday that the move was taken under the principle of reciprocity, after the United States announced on December 16 that it would fully suspend entry for citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger starting January 1, 2026. “In accordance with the principle of reciprocity, the Government of Burkina Faso informs national and international opinion of its decision to apply equivalent visa measures to United States nationals,” Traoré said. The U.S. restrictions were justified on the grounds of insufficient information to assess security risks posed by certain foreign nationals. Traoré said Burkina Faso remains committed to mutual respect, sovereign equality, and reciprocal relations, adding that the country remains open to cooperation with partners on that basis. Mali has announced similar measures against U.S. citizens, and while Niger’s state media reported a comparable move, no formal confirmation has been issued just yet. The three military-led states have formed a regional bloc after breaking with the West African regional body ECOWAS, accusing it of enforcing sanctions and political pressure at the behest of Western governments following their coups.
