The answer, by the way, to that rhetorical question is the same thing that is wrong with the US: that you just can't wrap your head around the fact that other countries matter and we should pay attention to the bullshit we pull everywhere, because it really fucking sucks.

A (short) critical history of artificial intelligence from a computational fallacy to tech fascism
Just before we wrap up 2025, we take a dive into a critical history of AI. This is an extended version of a short talk I gave in Helsinki at an event called Critical AI.

This is not hard. Artists are not responsible for ensuring the Kennedy Center remains relevant and successful. The center’s board is responsible for that, in a fiduciary way. All of this energy being directed at artists should be re-directed at the board.

Thankfully, this interesting piece is not represented by this lede from the Conversation. Polite reminder that grave goods were not stored for future use, or for communication with the future. If we use them to feel connected with the past, that's our practice, not theirs
As an object of anthropological enquiry, the bunkered data centre continues the ancient human practice of storing precious relics in underground sites, like the tumuli and burial mounds of our ancestors, where tools, silver, gold and other treasures were interred.
Underground data fortresses: the nuclear bunkers, mines and mountains being transformed to protect our ‘new gold’ from attack
Bunkers, bomb shelters, mines and mountains all play critical roles protecting against our latest existential threat: the terrifying prospect of data loss.

President Trump’s spiteful defamation suit against the Pulitzer Prize Board may backfire, as the latter is now demanding Trump’s psychological records, prescription medication records, and tax returns in the discovery process. trib.al/LUCScTR

America, you have spoken loud and clear: You do not like AI. But what if AI is the way to restart the world’s idea machine?
We’re running out of good ideas. AI might be how we find new ones.
What if the best use of AI is restarting the world’s idea machine?

Fuck every single person who voted for him, or who couldn't "bring themselves" to vote for Harris. They all deserve cancer.

The really good truths are esoteric, but they’re not actually suppressed. I have a whole podcast that talks about them all the time.
This is a good point from Michelle Goldberg. I’d add that in an atomized media landscape, where attention is both critical and dearly bought, there are few incentives for the type of cooler, consensus-based presentations when audiences were both large and stable. www.nytimes.com/2025/12/20/o...

How does an LLM work?

An LLM is a black box. We know why it works the way it does- the principles behind it- but we can't take the sides off and look inside it and go "ah, here's the bit that makes it say 'you're absolutely right and I'm sorry.'"

We do know it doesn't have any facts inside it.
