I got a DVD of Hard Boiled for Christmas, and one of the delights was watching it with my daughter, who then invited all of her friends over to watch it.

Of course, now it looks like I will have to buy it again to read Vern's essay.
Okay, I don't know how this happened but somehow I wrote an essay for the Imprint release of HARD BOILED. I will be carrying it around showing it to strangers for now on.

The Fables show was amazing and I'm very excited to already have my ticket for the Pageant tour. Incredible performances without just being copies.

“Look me in the eye and tell me you know what to wear to a vigil” might be the greatest line of TV dialogue this century. Perfect set up, writing, delivery.
If you never watched Search Party, it’s on Netflix now. The first three seasons are great TV, and then the final two are the closest a sitcom has ever gotten to Holy Motors or The Magic Mountain.

There's a great local group that rents out DIY and gardening stuff and this page from their web catalogue looks like it is focused on providing kit for local serial killers.

The GB grid saw 4 GWh of battery storage added in 2025, 30% more than in 2024.

(For context an average of about 80 GWh is drawn from the grid every day)

The average capacity was 95 MWh (about 10,000 times bigger than a domestic battery), and 75% had a max power output of over 50 MW
Another record-breaking year for UK battery storage as 4GWh comes online
Operational UK grid-scale battery storage capacity grew 45% in 2025, with 4GWh coming online to reach 12.9GWh cumulative capacity.

It's hard not to look back and go "all this in only three years?"

Also, we should call this era "Navel Pop."

I was living in Kingsbury, NW London, when this came out, and I thought I was supporting a local band by buying it. I was very wrong, but it's still a great record.

This prompted me to ponder the use of "swimming baths" and when "swimming pool" became more popular. Well, even by 1972 "baths" was not in wide use. Except in clips like this, I guess.

I made some of my happiest memories in the US, and was planning to go again this year for my high school reunion. Nope. All my American friends are welcome to visit here anytime.
We have friends in the US, have visited several times and almost certainly would have gone again before 2029 but now resolutely won't.

[Cassandra voice] England are at long last in a position to win the World Cup again, and people will say we only won because others boycotted the finals.

This is an amazing idea. Do it.
I really want to see a season played with the exact same cast as a previous one. I want to know what having played the game with the same people does to the dynamic.

AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHHH! Every four to five years we "discover" this and make all the right noises and nothing changes. Then there's a new strategy (which is essential the same as all of the previous strategies), and a bit of cash and then it all goes quiet and then we go back to the start.
Last week, the Health and Social Care Committee questioned Stephen Kinnock on the findings of the report which the committee commissioned into palliative care.

The reports findings were worse than we were expecting.

It is clear that palliative care services are not good enough and must improve.

Our 17-year-old had friends over for a NYE sleepover, and they watched Galaxy Quest, Hard Boiled and a stage production of Les Mis. So I'd say the kids are alright.

Perhaps it really was just a random Alsatian 🤷🏻‍♀️ But the wolf was shot dead at Ickleford a couple of days later. Four years on, my dad joined the local paper as a junior reporter and made a career writing these sorts of stories. He still likes to tell this one after half a century 😆

For two straight years our office was next door to Jimmy Nail's production company. Only saw him once in the far distance. After he moved out Lynda La Plante's production company moved in. Never saw her.
