People being like, "But Venezuelans are happy about Maduro being gone!" have the memories of goldfish. IN 2003, the narrative was that Iraqis celebrated the U.S. invasion and capture of Saddam.

Whether they were happy or not, invading Iraq was still the wrong thing to do.

BASH: There's no question that Maduro was a destabilizing force in the region. People are celebrating in the streets all over. Is it fair to say there's some benefit in him not being in power?

CHRIS MURPHY: What changes? You just heard Sen. Cotton not be able to explain who's running the country

"this is a distraction from the epstein files"

the US just performed an imperialist coup of another nation and declared itself in charge for its resources

the people of venezuela just became hostages of the US government and are terrified.

it's not a distraction. it's another atrocity.

Her opinion on this does not edify us.
MARGE RIPS TRUMP’S 🇻🇪 ATTACK: “This is the same Washington playbook we’re so sick and tired of, that doesn’t serve the 🇺🇸 people… it serves big corporations, banks, and oil executives — our neighborhood is in the 50 United States, not the southern hemisphere.”

For the love of democracy my man hire me and I will never let this happen again.

if rally effects lasted george hw bush would have won and served a second term
The big variable is *not* success or failure of the military action; it's the out-party's reaction. Which in this case has started out pretty negative.

That's short-run. Medium run, which typically comes quickly, is that rally effects don't last.

They know how to break things, yet have no more idea how to conduct a war than they know how to actually govern. They'll just keep killing more people (fast and slow) and miming spectacle until we stop them.

Trump's decision to depose Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has drawn praise inside the U.S., especially from Republican leaders. But the invasion also faces significant opposition from elected officials across the political spectrum.

A “Secretary of State” who’s not read into the pardon of a foreign head of state sitting in an American prison is not the Secretary of State.

So you can stop interviewing him. (Again.)
RUBIO: Maduro was indicted. Nobody ever did anything about it.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Hernandez was convicted by a jury

RUBIO: The pardon authority is something I'm not involved in

STEPHANOPOULOS: Do you support it?

RUBIO: I wasn't involved in those deliberations. I haven't looked at the case file.

Yeah, people are fixating on a Cabinet Secretary being given a sovereign country to run because the president waged war without congressional approval and kidnapped the old leader. Weird that they’d get hung up on that.
WELKER: Mr. Secretary, are you running Venezuela right now?

MARCO RUBIO: Yeah. People are fixating on that. Here's the bottom line -- we expect to see changes in Venezuela

And this ties to how Republicans are just treated as forces of nature, not actual people making decisions.

Democrats created a program that cut child poverty in half, and then it ended because like 2 Democrats and EVERY REPUBLICAN voted not to extend it.

Social media's response? "FUCKIN' DEMS"
January 4, 2026 at 3:50 PM
Helpful reminder that every single member of the Senate voted to confirm Rubio and I said at the time that meant they needed to be primaried and it's still true. It's only gotten more true.
We are not getting the outcome that Rubio promised or that he promised himself. We are getting the worst possible outcome for everyone except perhaps 4 members of the PSUV ruling clique and a handful of Trump cronies.

They like Trump and want to help him. The "this was illegal and awful" editorial they ran this morning means nothing if they coat the front page in stories normalizing this after
The most junior copy editor at the nation’s worst college paper could find a way to squeeze “which killed an estimated 40 people” somewhere into these top 6 grafs of the NYTimes story.

It was a conscious decision to bury it in the bottom half.

January 4, 2026 at 4:41 PM
This is so inadequate and the words the American people need him to say include illegal and invasion and Iraq and never again.
Schumer: "Rubio I just heard in your interview said they're doing what's good for the American people. If they want to do what's good for the American people, it should not be some escapade in Venezuela. It should be focusing on lowering the cost of living that Americans are struggling with."
