None of this is to dispute that the Democratic Party is in dire straits. It is unpopular with its own voters, unpopular with much of the broad middle of the public, and is so weak in rural areas that it may not be able to win anything other than a bare majority in the Senate, if that. But despite those red-dominant county-by-county maps you sometimes see, Democrats aren’t dealing with a crimson MAGA electorate. They are facing a familiar problem, one that’s plagued American political parties for most of this century: how to build durable ties to a fickle, cynical and often uninterested electorate that is skeptical of the ability of the political system to work at all, much less improve Americans’ lives. To face this successfully may take a fundamental rethinking of the American-style political party, and a move away from a model of political consumerism — in which parties attract voters with minor message tweaks and appeals to identity and self-expression — and toward one of association, where the party is a participatory organization with purpose and structure beyond electing a handful of ambitious people to office.

Republicans haven't changed. After Wallace was assassinated, Nixon and his aides discussed planting leftist materials in his apartment. Wallace wasn't shot by an ideological opponent; Bremer had no problem with his segregationist platform. He wanted fame.

NPR puts this into the link but this is not in the headline on the website. It's a sop to Bluesky users. Compare what AP used for a headline. No hedging.

NPR is an ideologically captured institution.
NPR headline: "Trump wants to stop states from voting by mail and using voting machines." It is missing the added small print NPR provided on its Bluesky post indicating that "legal experts say" he doesn't have this power. The AP headline is clear and unambiguous: "Trump vows to change how elections are run. The US Constitution doesn't give him that power." It doesn't couch the powers of the President as open for interpretation and debate.

Governor Bubbles out here humiliating me again. Just as a reminder, there are Mississippians who, even though they knew it wouldn't matter, still went to the polls to reject Republicans. A conservative from California wouldn't last 5 seconds as a Mississippi liberal.

Trump's lawyer said this and they said that. Yay, information. I'm so informed. I couldn't come to a conclusion about whether this is good for people on social security or bad for them but I know the words everybody said. I hate it here.
They said the administration made “a sudden and striking departure from generations of precedent spanning more than a dozen presidential administrations,” by seeking to “throw open its data systems to unauthorized (and often unvetted) personnel who have no demonstrated need for the personally identifiable information (‘PII’) they seek.” They said the administration wanted high court relief “simply because a lower court has interfered with something the Executive Branch wants to do.” But they said that “has never been the standard for emergency relief, and the Court should not adopt it now.” Trump’s solicitor general, John Sauer, wrote that his emergency application “presents a now-familiar theme: a district court has issued sweeping injunctive relief without legal authority to do so, in ways that inflict ongoing, irreparable harm on urgent federal priorities and stymie the Executive Branch’s functions.” When it comes to this Social Security case specifically, Sauer said the government “cannot eliminate waste and fraud if district courts bar the very agency personnel with expertise and the designated mission of curtailing such waste and fraud from performing their jobs.” Opposing emergency relief were the plaintiffs who brought the case and secured the preliminary injunction — labor unions and an advocacy group for retired Americans.
