#OnThisDay Jan 2 1917: Led by International Workers of the World, 1000 lumberjacks walk off the job to join the mill worker's strike in Virginia, Minnesota. Police try to crush the strike by running the lumberjacks out of town, but by February the company grants most of the workers’ demands.

#OnThisDay Jan 2 1935: The "400", Chicago & Northwestern Railway's most famous express passenger train, is introduced between Chicago and St Paul-Minneapolis to compete with the CBQ's Zephyr and Milwaukee Road's Hiawatha. Later upgraded and named "Twin Cities 400", it made the run in 6.5 hours.

#OnThisDay Jan 1, 1953: Milwaukee Road "Super Domes" begin their first day of regular service on the transcontinental Olympian Hiawatha and the 2 daytime Twin Cities Hiawathas. The first full-length dome cars in the world, they proved awkward to operate but were great publicity for the railroad.
