The persistent belief that a previous version of Portland was perfect feeds the idea that our best days are behind us. It's inherently conservative, a nostalgic obsession that's little more than a Make Portland Great Again philosophy.

We've gotta define a compelling vision of the future.

Many don't realize that the most vulnerable or immune compromised depend on the rest getting vaccinated properly to keep diseases from spreading out of control. It's not just “my body, my choice” when it comes to saving lives.

Okay. Can I share a big pet peeve? When (mostly white) people make New Year's posts with lunar new year zodiacs when the Gregorian New Year happens. Put all your zodiac animal posts away until it's actually the right new year. (February 17th in 2026)

An important change to note. And as Bob says, one going largely unnoticed:
For those of us who pay quarterly taxes or any other payment by December 31, this unheralded change in postal policy can bite you in the butt. This could have other unforeseen consequences (e.g., mail-in balloting), but for now, this is more timely.

Look ahead promptly to how this will affect Vote By Mail this fall.
As of 12/24/25, USPS changed policy on when they postmark mail. Mail dropped off is no longer guaranteed a same-day postmark. Tax returns & other time-sensitive items are now stamped when they reach a regional processing center, which may be days later. Plan deadlines accordingly to avoid penalties.

It's okay to keep wearing masks to protect yourself and others from illness. Self-care and community care are how we move forward.

In a moment where RFK Jr is taking away life-saving vaccines and spreading health misinformation on an unprecedented scale, making comments that stigmatize other important layers of public health protections like mask wearing is not the play.

It is utterly catastrophic that RFK Jr. plans to end CDC recommendations for most childhood vaccines.

It’s a betrayal of science, ethics, compassion, and the people of the United States.

And it was also a specific goal of Project 2025 (page 254).
