Just 230 homicides in the City of Los Angeles last year, down from 1,028 in 1980, when I began investigating the LAPD for the LA Times.
What makes the 78% decline even more remarkable is the city population grew by a third to nearly 4 million between those years.
The homicide rate declined 83%.

United Artists was a studio (literally yesterday I explained this to a 30-year-old who thought it was a union)
Without revealing your actual age, what's something you remember that if you told a younger person they wouldn't understand?

Right. The point is not “it matters extra because it’s a citizen,” the point is “we either hang together or we will all hang separately.”
i think it is ok to reiterate that the victim as a us citizen. yes, noncitizens are equally entitled to human rights. but also, it's important to illustrate how ice isn't about immigration at all

Much has been written about potential safety benefits of AVs. Given the lack of AV data transparency, I cannot speak to whether, or to what degree, AVs are safer than an average human driver. What I can say:

This is the wrong question.

We Still Don’t Know if Robotaxis Are Safer Than Human Drivers
And even if self-driving technology proves to be less dangerous, there are many better ways to improve traffic safety and prevent fatal crashes.

When police complain their hands are tied this is the kind of stuff they mean. They want to be able to do things that are both stupid and violent.

Democrats cannot vote for a DHS budget that doesn’t restrain the growing lawlessness of this agency.
A witness shared this video with me showing an ICE officer shooting a driver in an SUV in south Minneapolis. DHS says the woman is dead.

FYI:

In 1916 the U.S. signed an agreement for control of St. Thomas, St. John & St. Croix, known as the “Danish West Indies,” in exchange for $25 million & a declaration that the U.S. would “not object to the Danish Govt extending their political & economic interests to the whole of Greenland.

@hilton-hotels.bsky.social, your website carries a statement against human trafficking. But ICE takes part in human trafficking by seizing people for foreign gulags financially dealing w/Trump. Support your hotels that resist ICE. Your customers are watching.

I just saw a video talking about the Tesla door safety problem and the number of comments that are like, "well you should read the manual" are...shocking.

No, cars should be intuitively safe. Passengers are not reading the manual. Are you doing a safety briefing every time you give someone a ride?

Every New Year's I think of this poem from Marge Piercy:

"How much have
I dared in opposition?

How much have I put
on the line for freedom?
For mine and others?
As these freedoms are pared,
sliced and diced, where

have I spoken out?"

Look ahead promptly to how this will affect Vote By Mail this fall.
As of 12/24/25, USPS changed policy on when they postmark mail. Mail dropped off is no longer guaranteed a same-day postmark. Tax returns & other time-sensitive items are now stamped when they reach a regional processing center, which may be days later. Plan deadlines accordingly to avoid penalties.

“You are not entitled to a response from us, or anyone, ever,” is what a US Education Department spokesperson wrote to one of our reporters, @megomatz.bsky.social, after she repeatedly tried to get comment from the department and its officials. My column on the condemnation of good journalism.
Our Reporters Reached Out for Comment. They Were Accused of Stalking and Intimidation.
Our journalists reach out to people they’re writing about to ensure fairness. But in this environment, they’ve found their efforts to do so are more likely to be vilified than appreciated.

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

And how clear it is when there are efforts to stop that journalism.

Muting a Black woman to claim the vote was unanimous is so incredibly on the nose
The White House claims the vote to rename the Kennedy Center was “unanimous.” That is false. I was muted on the call and denied the opportunity to speak or register my opposition. That is not consensus. That is censorship.
