HELLO, I'm an illustrator, cartoonist, and writer. You can find links to my portfolio, my books, merch, events, and more right here: linktr.ee/philmcandrew
I was talking music with a bud earlier today and we got to talking about bands that aren't active anymore that we wish we could see play live and his top pick was "the talking heads, but specifically the talking heads in like 1978" and then he sent me a link to this and, uh, yeah, good pick:
Psycho Killer (Live at The Agora, Cleveland, OH, 12/18/1978)

This is a relief to hear! I'm glad I'm not just imagining it!

There's something about the vocal stylings of a lot of current popular music that I find very grating but my musical vocabulary is not sophisticated enough to explain it

am I just an old crank who is a tiny bit stoned or did popular music people mostly sing in a less annoying way before the turn of the century

Elliott Smith could also rock with the best of 'em! Before his solo career took off, he had a band called HEATMISER, a band that I think should be mentioned more when we talk about cool bands in the 90's.

David Berman could also rock, in his own wonderful way youtu.be/MDjcQpJ3GsE?...

I think I was about 17 years old when I first heard this album. Every track on it is as familiar as an old friend at this point.

For me it's probably a tie between Elliott Smith and David Berman. They both had incredible bodies of work, they were both less celebrated in life than they should have been, and they both were guys who I want to imagine would have continued to make interesting music well into old age.
What music artist’s death hurt the most?

Interesting! Wolf Parade never really hit for me, even back then. But Feist has at least a couple albums that I enjoyed a bunch and that have only grown on me over the years!

I'm told young folk are suddenly listening to wolf parade because of the gay hockey show, but as a guy who was a young folk in the early 2000s I am here to say that y'all will get way more mileage digging into the discography of Feist, who is also prominently featured in the gay hockey show

Republicans: WE NOMINATE SKELETOR
Democrats: We dislike Skeletor but we will vote to confirm him. Please give us between 5 and 50 dollars.
<Later>
Democrats: I stand before you to condemn the actions of Skeletor. He should have never been given this power. Please give me between 5 and 50 dollars.

Just adding myself to the chorus of artists who have had to endure absurd graphic novel deadlines from a big traditional publisher. Won't be doing that again. My body still hurts, years later, from being in a position where I was expected to draw 500 full color comic pages very quickly.
I wish I'd thought sooner to explain to tradpub editors that illustrating a graphic novel is not like writing a prose novel or illustrating a picture book, a 250-page GN is actually like illustrating eight picture books.

Woke up early to spend my morning volunteering as a judge for my hometown region's entries into the scholastic art awards. My 6th year volunteering as a judge. Winning some scholastic art awards as a teenager definitely put some juice in young Phil's tank 🥲

I'm in a big zoom meeting with a bunch of high school art teachers and someone who doesn't have their mic muted just said "dang, I can't get my zoom to google...."

Hire Phil! This stuff is amazing. I’m actually sad that it isn’t already in a rulebook on my shelf.
I feel very strongly that someone should hire me to illustrate a fantasy ttrpg

You couldn't publish this today. You'd have to cloak it under several layers of metaphor.
