Trans people were the canary in the coal mine.

Labour gave tacit approval to ripping up the Equality Act by failing to uphold it or legislate for it when it was under attack from often dark money funded fascist lawfare.

And here comes the mandatory caveat: It's not a high salary, it's very competitive, it needs more funding and it's by no means a perfect system. But it's the reason why I've been able to write full time the past 10 years or so.

I regularly see people wondering how it's possible that there are so many musicians and writers and film makers and artists from a tiny nation like Iceland.

And the answer is really simple: State funding for art education and artists. I literally get a salary from the government to write books.
I’m constantly astounded at the sheer level of artistic production coming out of Iceland. Novels, movies, music. Amazing.

That is 100% correct.
I am so sick of Europeans expressing exaggerated horror at ICE when pushbacks, ‘accidental’ drownings, and incarceration of migrants have been policy here for years.

Meta is putting a "Name Tag" feature in Ray-Bans - facial recognition through the glasses' camera. You look at someone, AI tells you who they are.
In an internal document, the company wrote that the timing is good because civil society groups are busy with politics and won't cause problems.

I know it's meant in good faith but "if we just made smaller scope games and charged 20-40 dollars for them it would fix the industry" is very funny to me. indies release like 20 of those a week on steam. are you buying them? is the industry fixed? no? hm. sounds like you need a different solution

In general the idea that Christianity was an "imposition" of some kind on like two thirds of Europe rather than a conscious political choice is just downright silly and I can say this because I come from the other third
You do not in fact have to hand it to neo-nazi edgelords who believe Christianity introduced empathy and this makes us weak

That's not to say that the existence of GLP-1s are directly making people more bigoted in their anti-fatness. But their marketing relies on extremely anti-fat tropes, floods the airwaves with anti-fat messages, and sends the message that anti-fatness is not just pro-health, it's morally righteous.

- Epstein-Barr virus is perhaps the major trigger for multiple sclerosis
- herpes simplex virus causes cold sores, genital herpes, infections in babies, deadly meningitis
- shingles virus causes an intensely painful disease

Disabled people are part of the future.
We must and should imagine and dream of futures where disabled people don't just exist but are everywhere, as we should be.
This need to fix/cure all disability is a eugenicist dreaming, and we should want better for ourselves.
I have a friend who said, of Starfleet Academy, that this took them out of it - that seeing a person in a wheelchair in the 32nd century seemed unrealistic, since medicine in Star Trek "should be able to cure whatever was wrong with them."

That's not the case, for any number of possible reasons.

we are not, in fact, only interested in 'what is the most of this that can be done'. we are interested in other humans, what we do and how we can learn to do it best.

the failure of Sora is at least partly down to this, I think. the purpose of watching movies is 'connecting with other human minds'

But people are still watching humans playing chess not AIs.

Also however fun F1 is, it's still not OK to compete in the 100m sprint by getting into a car
