My rivers are captive. The Kiphisos runs through a concrete channel like a drain. The holy Ilissos echoes only in a place name and song, silent under the asphalt of Kalidromiou, and a sample only of the little Eridanos trickes under glass, then makes its secret journey towards the sacred way.

One of the weird things about being Generation X is you see actors who were adults when you were a kid and they have fewer lines on their faces than you do.

Yesterday at the vigil for Renee Good outside the U.S. Embassy, a Greek cop, a member of a force not known for its kindness to protesters, told me she understood what we were doing and why, looked me right in the eye, said “We’ve seen the video too”, and shook her head.
