some people love quoting "the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must." That was Athens saying that at the height of its empire. Few of those people seem to remember what happened to Athens the very next year.

1. I think if you look into empirical work done you’ll find that there is a causal relationship between housing prices and homelessness. 2. Afaik couch surfing because you can’t afford to rent *is* a type of homelessness, just not visible
/chronic homelessness.

I think my big issue with it is that it was clearly written by someone raised prot. the movie feels completely inauthentic wrt what a parish is like or what a conservative catholic priest is like. I consequently couldn’t really suspend my disbelief and enjoy the plot

How did a bunch of men all convince themselves that Tariff Otaku would actually be better for the economy and give them all free stimulus checks unlike that shrill nagging bitch Kamala Harris it is a mystery

we've come full circle where Republican lawmakers are regurgitating the inaccurate criticisms levied against them in the past as actual policy positions

full simulacrum baby, let's ride

Sprawl is subsidized to a huge extent, directly funded by urban cores through massive infrastructure costs, but also indirectly through things like roads in cities that privilege suburban commuters while limiting space for local urban residents. I’m skeptical of downplaying the role of policy here.

the truly forbidden take is that the vibecession and by extension basically all negative economic sentiment since 2008 is probably just the middle class being jealous of their rich friends and not actual economic strife (outside of stuff like housing costs in cities)

Amazing how much 2025 was a hyper correction for the fact that in 2024 voters clearly didn't know what they were voting for because the media didn't report on Trump's actual policies/voters refused to believe what they were voting for.

People say that Swifties who are convinced she's a lesbian are gen z QAnon but in reality their tortured and convoluted interpretations of plain language using baffling and irrelevant secondary sources reveal gaylors not as gen z qanon but as the gen z federalist society

The way I think about it, especially with tech, is that they are trying to get ahead of an emerging consensus that their products are addictive/destructive by destroying the state incentive/capacity to regulate them. Basically as if Big Tobacco did a coup once it became clear cigs cause cancer.

It’s odd to me how absolutist folks get about practical issues. Was USAID also an imperialist soft power tool? 100%. Did kicking it over with no replacement plan result in millions of deaths nobody seems to care about, also 100%.

Sometimes good gets done for selfish reasons.

far and away the most compelling argument for pro-natalist policy is how fucking dysfunctional greying countries are becoming politically. can't cut elderly benefits. can't raise taxes. can't let in workers. no throw only fetch politics until something collapses.

honestly it's beyond even doing undemocratic things--they're horrified by the idea of doing politics *at all.* the idea that liberalism might conceive of itself as a political movement fighting it out in the bloody arena is anathema to them

Combine

“Donald Trump backs away from almost anyone who challenges him”

with

“Donald Trump has suborned Congress, the Supreme Court, top law firms, universities, multiple media conglomerates, and the business community”

to learn something interesting about American elites!
Certainly looks like we scared the President away from Chicago. Fighting like hell works.

the answer to "why has the supreme court gone insane" is the same as the answer to "why has elon musk gone insane" is the same as the answer to "why has my uncle gone insane" which is that people mostly mirror the prevailing beliefs in their social environment and they're immersed in nazi media

Earlier this year, SCOTUS tried to construct a stupid legal framework where the President was allowed to destroy basically all independent institutions except for the Federal Reserve, which was deemed too economically important.

Unsurprisingly, even that was not enough for Trump.
Hard to pick the most morally indefensible thing the Supreme Court did this year, but the most legally indefensible thing they did was say Humphrey's Executor is overturned except for as it applies to the Federal Reserve because their sugar daddies don't want that.
