So much of our present crisis is coddled, ignorant, and short sighted people tearing down the institutions that protect them because they don’t understand that bad things can happen.

This week in film teaching I covered French film noir with specific focus on Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Louis Malle, 1958) and how the film was in Nouvelle Vague modality with a protagonist whose downfall is not facilitated by a femme fatale but through the technological obstacle of an elevator.

Not only is Marty Bach (managing partner at Kenner, Bach, and Ledeen) all over the Epstein Files, he's offended that you don't understand that this is how the world works and that it's clients like this which allow the firm to afford the nice offices and the town car service.

The best part of running across raccoons at night is they have big “well what the fuck are you doing here?” energy

Something to keep in mind the next time the city tries to repurpose parking and drivers complain that every last car is necessary at all times. The storm was two weeks ago.

Sacre bleu!
It runs even deeper than this: Simon and Braisaz-Bouchet are the same age and come from the same tiny village so they've known (and disliked) each other for ever, and it was rumored that Simon has been known since childhood for her stealing tendencies but got a pass thanks to her sporting abilities

Sometimes people don’t realize that genius is just taste taking the time to mess around with stuff.
This clip of John Williams & Steven Spielberg tinkering with the E.T. theme will always have me floating. History in the making.

When I lived in France we had a sweet old neighbor lady who would spit every time she passed a certain house. Eventually, her daughter explained to me that the home belonged to a man who’d collaborated with the Nazis 60 YEARS AGO. May these ICE goons face a similarly lonely future.
