This is a good point that there is more at issue here than basic competence. These errors could only happen where you have both (1) an incompetent person in charge, and (2) everyone else either unwilling or unable to correct them.
A summar of the legal news today (re: Comey and the Texas redistricting): Bad lawyers are bad, and they're worse if you chase out every good lawyer who could possibly help them be ok.

This is a fantastic bit of lawyering by a prosecutor who just effectively told the judge that a declination memo exists without technically violating his direct instructions
MORE: Under questioning by the judge, prosecutor Tyler Lemons said that he’s under orders from the Deputy Attorney Generals’s office not to disclose whether there is a declination memo recommending against the prosecution of Comey

I just realized that, based on recent success, at some point in the future they're going to try a live action remake of The Owl House and... I need a drink.
Also: Nimona? (Second drink please).

Here's how lawyers learn criminal procedure: "the grand jury votes on the indictment and it's filed in the court. Then the prosecution starts and here's where things get interesting/complicated/fun". There's literally nothing on "what if the grand jury doesn't vote on the indictment which is filed?"

They will eventually run out of animated movies to turn into live action movies. Then we will be free.

"Well, Jim, we're going to move to dismiss because we think they improperly influenced the grand jury to vote their way. It's a high standard so it'll be an uphill battle, but we're going to fight hard."

"Actually, the grand jury never saw the indictment."

" . . . . . . fucking what?"

I didn't even know this was a mistake you could make. Literally never heard of it. Truly blazing new trails in the area of prosecutorial screw ups.

Sexual harassment is a scourge to academia and should have no place in our field. That it still does is, in part, because institutions still value academic prestige over the untold harms done to often early career scholars.

I'm looking for the European equivalent of "flyover states" (given that we take the train, not the plane). The train-through regions?

But you imagine where you might be, eventually, when you learn IT has HAPPENED.

Maybe you will wake up, anxious and scared and angry (i.e., normal).

Then, out of nowhere, the push notification from THE NEWS: “Breaking: IT Has HAPPENED.”

What will you feel like? When IT HAPPENS?
When It Happens
It’s been so long, you sometimes forget that eventually, IT will HAPPEN. It’s impossible to say when IT will HAPPEN. But it can’t be too long until...

You might not have caught what just happened on the Senate floor, but the Senate just “deemed as passed” the Epstein resolution.

That means as soon as it arrives from the House, it automatically passes the Senate (with no amendments) and heads to the President’s desk.

Wow.

Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, heir to the throne of Saudi Arabia and current de-facto ruler of that kingdom, whose word is law and power is unquestioned, is visibly like “whoah dude, dial down the authoritarian thing a bit”
Q: Why wait for Congress to release the Epstein files? Why not just do it now?

TRUMP: It's not the question that I mind. It's your attitude. I think you're a terrible reporter. It's the way you ask these questions. You start off with a man who's highly respected asking him an insubordinate question
