Small thread!
My father liked to say that good management is like air. You don't notice it until it's gone and you're choking to death.

Not all management is bad, but bad management is exponentially more noticeable than good management.

Bad management may be the job where LLMs are most useful.

In general, if we think someone is engaging in bad faith, my belief is that the only *winning* move is to disengage

Continuing to engage because we enjoy it is prolly neutral-to-bad, but it can be entertaining. If it's no longer entertaining, then it's just bad.

Each actor pursues efficiency, the system interprets that as consensus. The equilibrium becomes indistinguishable from coordination.

The market becomes its own regulator; a distributed organism selecting for rent-seeking behavior. A self-enforcing enclosure that’s not ideological but algorithmic.

People are really overreacting to us building the Qataris an air base in Idaho. It’s only there for defensive reasons in case Montana or Wyoming invade them.

For any who need to hear this:

Most people, throughout history, have not had to cook every day. It's not weird to not always have the energy to do that. And when you have some but not tons of energy, a lot of packaged or frozen foods have gotten good in the past 20 years.

Complaints about "virtue signaling" seem to me like an attempt on the part of the person using the phrase to signal that they have the virtue of seeing clearly to people's motivations and judging their actions by those intentions rather than their effects.

It was our duty in office to warn of dangers when we found them. We’re doing that again today.

Remember the TV show Wife Swap? Can we do the same but with algorithms? People of opposing views live with each other social media for two weeks. I think that would be very interesting TV to watch.

Today we are horrified that people used to sooth babies with gin and morphine. Future generations will feel the same about us giving tablets to toddlers, smartphones to preteens and social media access to teenagers.

There's a million-dollar mobile game to be made out of the job of line management at airports, by the way. Shortening and lengthening queues so that people are never hanging out in an unmanaged hallway space and never walking through useless empty queues.

This is the best analysis of news media and social media I've read in a long time - with some very good news for the relatively few news outlets taking the much harder path of building subscription businesses instead of attention businesses (yes, there is a big difference).
The Desire Distribution
Substack’s revenue curve, the end of the winner-take-all media markets, and the cleansing power of money.
