Discworld QOTD, from Making Money

“She had the slightly wistful, slightly hungry look that so many women of a certain age wore when they’d decided to trust in gods because of the absolute impossibility of continuing to trust in men.”
Discworld QOTD, from Thief of Time

“‘Dojo! What is Rule One?’

Even the cowering challenger mumbled along to the chorus:

‘Do not act incautiously when confronting little bald wrinkly smiling men!’”
Discworld QOTD, from The Fifth Elephant

"‘I don’t know how to do officering.’

‘No one knows how to do officering, Fred. That’s why they’re officers. If they knew anything, they’d be sergeants.’"

Zohran's campaign was his determination to make New York a city everyone can afford to live in. Huge congratulations!

His success will resonate throughout the world. A story where no one is left behind.

It's time to write that story across England & Wales too.

Did you happen to leave your @londonreviewbookshop.co.uk purchases on the Metropolitan line yesterday?

Did one of your friends do this and send an anguished message to the group chat?

If so, Darren has just done you a very good turn. 👇
If anyone lost a bag of books from LRB Bookshop on the Metropolitan Line between Baker St- Watford, I handed it to a cleaner when the train terminated at Watford tube station. And if you have far more followers than me, please share this status. LRB bookshop is not cheap!

Japan's "Mundane Halloween" costume contest is back!

Each year website DailyPortalZ holds a contest where people dress up as something super duper ordinary.

Here's a thread of some of my favorites from the 2025 contest!

When humans look at something we find beautiful our brains release dopamine, lifting mood & if we connect with what we're looking at oxytocin, giving us a sense of belonging.

I love that we’re all unanimously like “listen that building is not sacred to me and it has a bloody history and if it came down ethically I probably wouldn’t shed a tear, but watching this man smash a wrecking ball into the side of it from sheer selfish malice has unexpectedly fucked me up”

folks can complain about the effectiveness of scheduled orderly mass protest but to think about it another way its the closest thing we have to the opening scene of A Muppet Christmas Carol where all the muppets sing "there goes Mr. Dipshit, there goes Mr. Ass" to Scrooge and it clearly bothered him
