One of the things that has helped me manage time as an independent editor/photographer is to use a solar graph as my watch face.
Seeing how much day I have left is much more helpful than watching hours tick by.

This is almost always wrong. Arguably, EVERY story benefits from adding a huge subterranean worm with quasi-mystical or semi-supernatural powers, or equivalent (similar to Moby Dick).
Obviously the bigger the worm, the more literary quality it adds.

My father did not like cats, and Calico was aware of his feelings. She would hide and pounce on him every chance she got, to which he would always deadpan "aren't you dead yet?"
