One of my favorite podcasts covered one of my favorite movies and it's maybe the best episode they've ever done.

Ghost World came out just before my senior year in HS and once I got the DVD I watched it 4-5 times a week for like... a year and a half lol.

I was legitimately in love with Thora Birch in this film when I saw it at maybe 18 or 19.

the way this movie was my whole personality for like six months

I wanted Enid's hair so bad and I didn't know how to style it (my hair is wavy-to-curly). BUT I GOT THE CUT ANYWAY.

DIRTBAG DESIRES
At one point Alex says the words “dirtbag desires” and it’s been four days since I listened to this episode and I can’t get the phrase out of my head. I need that stitched onto a trucker hat right meow! 😂

Soeaking of media giving concepts language(-ish), re: Red Panda), @youaregood.bsky.social, I’ve also heard stories of kids using Steven Universe to explain/ defend their queer friends and family.

As an uncle, I’ve been actively waiting to introduce this to my nephews ❤️

The news is appalling, but a spot of joy was seeing this week's @youaregood.bsky.social hit my podcast queue, and it's @alexsteed.bsky.social talking about ANCHORMAN (2004) with the delightful @chriswarcraft.bsky.social and Sooz Kempner.

This episode is the best examination of grief I have ever heard and the timing for me couldn't have been better.

My first husband the victim of an unprovoked attack by a stranger 14 years ago, it left him with a traumatic brain injury which killed him a year and a half later. 1/2
NEW EPISODE! We go somehow deeper than normal this week. In a slight (and temporary) variation of format, we talk with actor and filmmaker Alex Alexander about depictions of grief in Lars Von Trier's The Idiots, Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited and Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester By The Sea.

Oh shit. Fuck yes. This movie was better than the era that spawned and I am still shocked MTV/Viacom was willing to fund it to be honest, but there it stands a cult favorite.

this is a beautiful episode that is as much about love as it is about grief, a couple moments I had to pause and just sit with the feelings.

We haven’t, but I did read it about 10 years back!
@youaregood.bsky.social have y’all ever done Road to Perdition? It feels like a real call back to the why are dads days and there’s a page to screen component as well if y‘all would enjoy that. Just a thought! Have been loving getting caught up with the show since I found it last year.

Such a lovely and honest conversation about grief. The bit about being in a liminal state hit home. My "grief incident" is years past, but I often feel like I'm in limbo, caught between memories that look different as I question what was real and a future that looks nothing like what I envisioned.

This means so much to me, and also please don't feel like your grief is in competition with folks who have had it "harder" in some way! All grief is weird and unpredictable and hard and real. 💜
Just finished this episode and want to thank you. I feel guilty engaging in this because my grief is from a different loss (loss of myself due to stroke) but this episode was so beautiful. Alex Alexander’s explanation of grief as disappointment is one that I needed to hear.

If you have never left a review, or haven't left one in a while, please consider doing so! It is helpful generally, and it will also counterbalance the person who left a one star review because they were upset we didn't cover The Others correctly.

Great podcast, here trying a new format - three films on grief.

Caveat; I've not seen the film The Idiot as yet.
