I’m still flabbergasted — and not a little bummed out — that we could write a long series of stories listing zillionaire after zillionaire who didn’t pay taxes for years and years — and basically nothing happened

I've lived in the PNW long enough now to recognize the precise mood that means it's time to increase the Seasonal Affective Disorder life hacks before I pull an Ishmael and start following funeral processions down the street.

I know all the various defenses of piracy, and can agree with some of them (preservation is important!) but when it comes to books, there really ain't any excuse I buy. More than any other medium, authors directly rely on royalties from purchases. Every purchase gets them income, even from big pubs.
Do not steal books, I beg. Borrow from a library. Libraries lend e-books!

Making my master's no longer a professional degree. Wow.

Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

Lol I was just about to make this connection bc they do make this pitch constantly and it says so much about them

People like sharing media! It's one of the main things about media! People watch bad movies on purpose just to enjoy shared context around media
the loss of shared context is also why i don’t know why they think we all want hyper-personalized tv shows and movies. i like being able to watch and discuss the same film!

I think the shortest version of why LLMs are an anti education technology is that education is fundamentally about making shared context to understand ourselves, each other, and the world

And by design LLMs destroy shared context
