We are so far beyond "show us your papers." They don't want to see the papers. We are now into the "give us the names" stage of the occupation.

ICE detained Arlit Maria Martinez on her way to work. 2 days later, her 15 yo son died of cancer. They wouldn't let her out to say goodbye. The family had planned to move back to Mexico prior to the cancer diagnosis but stayed for his treatment. Now, Mr Martinez has lost his wife to ICE & his son.

Mike Johnson: One of the things the president probably had not thought through is when you bring interest rates down to 10% the problem is that the credit card companies would just stop lending money

This is crazy.
This is a jaw-dropping piece about ICE recruitment.
The article appears to be partly paywalled and I would encourage anyone who can afford it to subscribe, Slate's got a hell of a sale going right now and subscriptions are how they can afford to pay freelancers for articles like this one

@tapirtrouble.bsky.social If Anthony and James go on the road, they will have endless material to work with such as ending the war on protein. 🥴
I thought this was a joke but it’s an actual post from the White House: “we are ending the war on protein”

How about ending the war on the health of this country?

Low interest rates FOR HIM. He could give a toss about the country.
The very real worry is that the financial idiot who bankrupted every business he's ever run will decide what matters more than anything is low interest and cheap money, without regard to the inflation that would cause.

This is the dipshit who still insists foreign governments pay our tariff costs.

@tapirtrouble.bsky.social This sounds like a great course. Have you taught anything like this? I love the use and discussion of maps as representations of power in LatAm history courses.
I teach "Mapping, Space, and Power" starting tomorrow. This 1942 LAT map came into my head from my grad school days and I spent hours reviving an old hard drive to find it. I can't believe it isn't *everywhere* in lit about understanding the power of maps but it is surprisingly hard to find online.

I would submit that a big part of the problem is that the public still gets to have things like football championships, even as the academic core is being gutted. It preserves the simulacrum of a real university at precisely the wrong time.

The message from the White House this morning is that, once again, it falls on ordinary American citizens to remain calm and professional when dealing with the heavily armed agents of the government because they are very emotional and might fly off into a murderous rage at the slightest insult.

ICE recruitment is going well.
