On one hand this is another thing passed but not enacted cause the previous mayor was too busy taking bribes in the club but on the other hand I may RT it every time I see a TurboTax ad
Yesterday we kicked off NYC’s Free Tax Prep season. That means filing your taxes at zero cost, keeping every dollar of your refund, and not getting ripped off by for-profit companies.

Nearly half of all New Yorkers qualify. Get help—virtually or in person—at nyc.gov/TaxPrep

It's interesting to think that had Google not killed RSS Reader, people would have inevitably made tools for it that would have produced a more hospitable, less evil environment for journalism.
whoever figures out a way to bundle independent journalism subscriptions will be a hero
i know that this is an unpopular take, but everyone starting their own newsletter as a revenue stream is not a sustainable model for writing and reporting or for people who love and want to pay for media.

today's report:

our "adopt a rent" venmo campaign paid 43 families rents who were at risk of evictions, including several moms of 4+ children

this is the way to get rent paid fast. like. 1000x better than any other way.

Elizabeth, a 10-year-old Minnesota girl, spent a month detained at the ICE facility in Dilley, TX before her release last night w/ her mom.

Dilley now has a measles outbreak and hundreds of other kids remain detained. Elizabeth has flu-like symptoms and her mom has hives, a school official told me

college application help is my go-to example for how American guanxi works - in its most powerful form, it can't be a simple market transaction, but still grows out of business and power relationships
well here's one news story about the thing I've been obsessively tweeting about for days (gift link) www.nytimes.com/2026/02/04/u...

Americans, we are living in a time of viciousness.

We are living in a time where speaking the “wrong” language or having the “wrong” skin color puts you in danger.

Congress must disband ICE and impeach Kristi Noem.

The global wellness industry is 4x larger than the pharmaceutical industry, if you are wondering why so many are in the Epstein files. That is where the money is.
Fun fact: the global wellness industry, composed mostly of unregulated snake oil, is at about $6.32 trillion dollars a year, 4x larger than the pharmaceutical industry.

Similarly, Roblox is worth $44 billion to Valve's $10 billion. Roblox has more concurrent users than Steam.

What's fascinating to me after reading a bunch of the Epstein files emails from all kinds of senior figures from all kinds of countries is just how many of them were randomly telling Epstein state secrets over unsecured, unencrypted email, and nobody's security services bothered with it AT ALL.

this is the only raw milk take I will engage with. someone make me some cheese.
The only use case I see for buying/selling raw milk is that you can low temperature pasteurize it yourself (which is heated to 63c for 30 minutes) before you make cheese.

Commercial milk rarely uses low temperature pasteurization because it takes longer, but it makes for better hard cheeses.

Historical analogies are arguments. So when someone makes an analogy between today and the Holocaust, or today and anything, think about they are really arguing for. What is the analogy trying to get you to do?

Perry: When is it OK to compare aspects of what’s happening in Minnesota to Nazi Germany?
Gov. Tim Walz has made some such analogies in relation to ICE and has been criticized for it, David M. Perry writes.

Thirteen years as a lawyer and I've never gotten as much media attention for any case as I'm getting now for my case asking for a special prosecutor against ICE.

I'm gratified, but admittedly it would be nice to have this many eyeballs on eviction or arraignment court.
