Every woman I know with advanced degrees has dated this guy/met this guy at a party and he has implied how ignorant/stupid she actually was because she didn't recite the History of the Peloponnesian War from memory.

Recently, via a series of strange events, I moved to Warsaw’s Muranów neighborhood - since today is the 82nd anniversary of the beginning of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, here are some photos of the memorial I took on a walk. Today, this neighborhood’s tragic history feels hauntingly present.

An insane decision by the State Department to terminate the Title VIII program, which has allowed American students to study the languages of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia – all essential for foreign policy, intelligence, the military and not least a better informed citizenry.
Since the 1950s, Summer Language Workshops at Indiana University have provided training in Russian, East European, and Central Asian languages. Generations have come to Bloomington to study Romanian, Polish, Kazakh, etc.
