Do they still expect journalists to have basic comprehension skills? Asking for a friend.
But can anyone tell me what this bit means? “For too long, those fluent in the good grammar of civility have deployed decorum to mask agendas of cruelty.”

I’m not sure we need a Serious Historian here — but as at least one of those things, this is what we call “completely fucked.” Anyone who has read Mein Kampf and has a modicum of critical faculty realises that it was an unhinged screed of personal prejudice dressed as, at the most, quarter-truths.
Curtis Yarvin, JD Vance’s friend & ideological influence, ended 2025 by claiming “only Hitler spoke the truth” about “too many subjects” & “Hitler was a genius.”

Extremism isn’t fringe on the right. Once marginal online extremists like Yarvin are influential at the highest levels of government.

In honour of St. George, tonight Faith is getting played LOUD while I bake and drink gin.
it's been 9 years since george michael died and the world is still so much worse off for it.

I posted something about how I was confused by the people at a pub who ordered espresso martinis but they didn’t like the taste of coffee. Am American replied “ha! America in a nutshell.” I pointed out that this was in Australia and no one involved was American. He got angry.
What’s the funniest reason someone got mad at you on Bluesky this year?

Excuse me an indulgence please, because I know tomorrow is the end of 2025 but I want to account for this year a bit and I don’t think I can face doing it tomorrow.

This year is a bastard and it should end, and I have to hope beyond all measure that, somehow, next year is better. 1/

Hold fast, Mel Curth and her legal team. The gormless uni administration must be held to account for its egregious and very public ethical breaches.
Statement Re: OU Discrimination Investigation

Today, my client, Mel Curth, submitted her appeal of the University's Institutional Equity Office finding that she engaged in arbitrary and capricious grading of a student's assignment in violation of that student's religious liberty.

Make this your New Year’s resolution, and actually stick to it.

It is always morally right to tell transphobes to blow it out their collective arse.
every year terfs call for the eradication of trans ppl and nobody ever tells them to fuck off.

Some days are harder than others. Yesterday I was thinking about the plan I have for an extended holiday to Australia in April. The only thing I wanted to do was call my dad to tell him, because I know he would have been so excited.

This is true and I was the only one on set excited about it (and playing the song on my phone to blank stares)
Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

Ahh the most insufferable people on earth: music opinion-havers.

Okay the year is coming to an end, but there was time enough for at least one more very *weird* historical take: someone arguing that the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck was a war crime.

Today I finally did my 2025 Christmas French toast! Cinnamon and ginger brioche with Glühwein-spiked vanilla cream cheese, bacon, black cherries, and maple drizzle, topped with a dusting of chopped candied almonds.

I wanted to work out how many hours there are between now and 12 January. Google helpfully tells me 50 days and therefore 1,200 hours, before asking if I want to switch on AI mode, and nothing sums this era up better than Google breaking basic calculations and then assuming I want more breakage.

Look, my pies are delicious, not photogenic, but this one I just wanted to shout out because I’m thrilled how it turned out. This is my 2025 bubble and squeak alternative: a roast goose and bacon pie with goose fat-roasted potatoes and Merlot gravy. With the Maus adorning it because…squeak I guess?
December 25, 2025 at 8:11 PM
While roasting the Christmas goose, my podcast app had @adriandaub.bsky.social telling me that we were going on a doozy deep-dive into Andrew Sullivan, and I’m afraid to say that anyone looking through my window would’ve seen me dejectedly muttering “you bastard Adrian” at a slowly-browning fowl.

So it’s Christmas and it’s a strange one. So I just want to take a moment to take stock. This year really could’ve been one of despair, and to a degree it has been. I lost both of my parents in quick and traumatic succession; in the midst of that, some very dear to me disappeared. 1/
December 24, 2025 at 9:11 AM
I’m once again quite taken by the fact that Stock is both miserable and also breathtakingly terrible at the job she’s devoted her life to.
Supporting LGBT+ rights is political in a way that breaches the civil service code and opposing them is not political in a way that precludes charitable status is a... complex position to hold, although one managed by former LGBA hate group with charitable status trustee Kathleen Stock.

This is, to give it its technical term, extremely fucking funny.

Quick, someone ask Dr. Oz how many penises this costs.

Why oh why do we now have an influx of these know-nothing dipshits spruiking for their Know-Nothing Dipshit Machines as though their suggestions mean a damn thing.
(standing in the NARA reading room, “feeding” a raft of unpublished government documents into AI somehow, as the archivists are definitely applauding me, telling it to find the important stuff)

“Look at me, I’m a historicalian!”

I'm writing again and it's a beautiful cosy Sunday and also I'm grateful for being able to do work that allows me to write lines like this in all seriousness and with a reasonable expectation that it'll be published.
