Overnight train from Vienna to Amsterdam in the new cocoon “mini cabins” felt like being on a spaceship, and it took me a little longer to realize it felt, specifically, like being in a prison on a spaceship.

Take a step back and think about where we are, as a society, when someone can argue (plausibility, if not convincingly) that a president’s threat to invade and conquer his neighbors is a “distraction” from him being a pedophile.

The thing about working as both an editor and a writer is I've now been on both sides of "ask for/be asked for 900 words" and "getting/delivering 2,500 words instead."

I think you could argue that Jacobin publishing a Twitter DM-based interview with someone pretending to be Ammon Bundy was one sign we’d end up where we are now.
Man I remember Malheur so well. Such a clear signal of what was to come. Some of the most privileged & entitled white men in the f'ing world engaging in open lawlessness in the name of their own imagined victimhood ...

... and getting away with it.

That's the true American template.

I remember hearing this rhetoric about immigrants in the Philadelphia suburbs ("I'm not xenophobic, but... there's too many too fast! It's a surge!") and then you check the numbers and there's actually a dramatic enrollment decline: static1.squarespace.com/static/686e6...

Dog experience: Yesterday, on a street corner in Vienna, I suddenly felt myself being perceived by a little black terrier. I look down and it's just staring at me, head half-cocked; the elderly owner also seemed to be like "what is my dog doing." So I pet it and said "nice to meet you" in German.

This is an echo of the Bush era, when Senate Democrats signaled that they would ultimately blink and never deprive The Troops of their funding. The White House rightly interpreted this as meaning: We can ignore their "demands" on Iraq.
Senator Durbin was asked about if he would ever hold up government funding because ICE was invading his own state and he said "of course not!".

It was considered unthinkable for Democrats to shut down the government over ICE. Instead their only problem was ACA subsidies.

I think possibly, maybe, perhaps, an upside of increasingly realistic AI video is that there will be a return to text/literacy as at least some people realize they can no longer trust videos they come across while endlessly scrolling an algorithmic feed.

He's not just gloating. He's saying Reiner was "reportedly" murdered by a Trump supporter, which is obviously untrue, and therefore it's good and justified. Even for him, this is overtly calling for people to go murder his critics because it makes him happy. He is literally a terrorist.
