Did you know that cacti are dicots? Look at these Cylindropuntia imbricata (tree cholla) seedlings. See that little guy between the two cotyledons (embryonic leaves) on the lower one? That’s the beginning of the chonky stem n spines. #nativeplants

went to a south austin texmex chain to try to feel the cornyn-mentum and had multiple other reporters try to interview me as we all searched for an actual cornyn supporter www.texasmonthly.com/news-politic...
John Cornyn Held a Rally for Supporters—They Were Nearly Outnumbered by Media

Downside: I'm going to have We Wiggle and We Wiggle and We Stop stuck in my head for the next week
Just did my first ever storytime (and bilingual storytime at that!) It went great!

Dilemma: a way to plant wildflowers in Colorado is to sow the seeds just before a big snow storm. This way they get cold stratified and watered.

But I'm beginning to suspect that we may not get that sort of weather this February.

I'm going to have to stratify them in the fridge, aren't, I?

I'm no longer in Texas, but I have never gotten so many campaign texts. Texas Democrats are actually putting in an effort this year.

It’s officially a record: Today = Denver’s 35th day at 60°+ this winter, the most 60°+ days in a winter season since records began in 1872.

Ugh. This affects libraries that aren't connected to a government institution (so NOT city/county/state institutions).

Passport processing is a hugely popular library service.
So the feds, who will arrest you for not carrying proof of citizenship, and who want to prevent you from voting if you don’t show ID, are now arbitrarily making it harder for citizens to get a passport.

Probably just a coincidence.

The State Department has ordered nonprofit public libraries to stop taking passport applications, cutting off a popular local service.

Not naming names, but I was just at a library that had most of their cookbooks under DDC 641.5 (general cookbooks) rather than appropriately classifying by things like baking or special diets. Made for really weird browsing.

I'm doing bilingual storytime for the first time next week, but they only gave me books in English. It took a surprising amount of time to find a good Spanish or Spanish-English book about/with dinosaurs at the right reading level.

I'll be reading one of the Lolo & Birdie books by Angela Dominguez

Colorado has started putting polling places in prisons, and people have been voting at really high rates there!
This is great. They should also be able to vote while in prison.
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger endorsed a constitutional amendment to automatically restore voting rights to people with felony convictions when they leave prison. State lawmakers passed the amendment and it will now appear on the state ballot.
