Hi folks. So excited to see the new communities being built here!

I stopped posting on the other site when it changed hands, so I’m a bit out of practice. But you can expect me to post here about local Berkeley politics, safe streets research & practice, epi methods, and racial & social justice.

BART has best Cost Efficiency (OE/VRM) in the nation both as a commuter rail and as subway 🎉

CA should be throwing every transportation dollar it's got at the spectacularly efficient and effective BART system to maximize ridership!

If I have to hear our City Traffic Engineer talk about stop sign warrants one more time I’m gonna scream.

Since Aug, 3 middle schoolers have been hit on a bike boulevard next to school but because people don’t always stop at stops signs, it’s better to leave things as the speed-inducing status quo.
Opinion: Construction compromises safe access to Longfellow Middle School
The safety of students and staff at Longfellow is at risk due to construction that will create hazards for those who walk and bike to school.

Feeling inspired and energized after today’s #StandUpForScience rally at Berkeley. Huge turnout. Fantastic speakers, including friends, colleagues, and Nobel prize winners (pictured here, Jennifer Doudna, inventor of CRISPR).

Well said, re: tariffs and car prices. This is not a win in any way.
Lastly, I fucking hate cars. I hate car-dependency.

But I care far more about people being able to eat and feed their kids, keep their jobs and have access to food and housing.

Instead of penalizing people by making cars cost more, let's move people away from the debt trap of cars possible.

“These poll results…should end the debate over who is the narrow interest group. People who want safe streets for everyone…are the clear majority. Anti-safety, anti-bike-lane advocates are a small marginal group who want to protect their own self-interest at the expense of vulnerable street users.”
New survey supports a strong Berkeley Bike Plan: Op-ed

Happening tonight!!! For BUSD families only!
Hey Berkeleyans! Does your kid bike to school? Do you wish they could but don't feel it's safe enough?

There’s a BUSD-specific listening session on the Bike Plan update: Tue 2/25, 6:30-8:30pm at King! Would be great to get input from families on how Berkeley can make it safer to bike to school.

This is a topic I have tried to push for years. Kids have a right to move around on our roads exactly the same as licensed drivers. You don't need a licenses to ride your bike in the street and yet cities do little to protect youth who need to use our roads.

My entire career, I've heard street safety advocates say they wish America took car crashes as seriously as plane crashes. Wrote about how that conversation needs to shift as deregulation and defunding comes for air travel, too, and why government trust is an overlooked component of "safe systems."
Are We Starting to Treat Plane Crashes The Way We Treat Car Crashes? — Streetsblog USA
As aviation disasters pile up, is America in the midst of a culture shift in transportation safety — and what would that mean for advocates on the ground?

I know things are going downhill quick but I lack a sufficiently deep understanding of both US history & how other authoritarian governments operate to grasp what’s coming.

This article was a really helpful read in providing that context. Highly recommend.

So glad these wonderful scholars/colleagues are speaking up about the consequences of canceling equitable transportation research projects.

Failing to examine a problem doesn’t make it go away, but it does make us all worse off.
Allowing political considerations to hollow out and cancel ongoing research is not only harmful to whatever domain the administration deems a threat, but it sets an alarming precedent for research at large, setting us on a path leading backward rather than forward.

I am feeling this very acutely.
We need to start planning for what to do if this trajectory is not stopped or diverted.

Collectively AND individually.

I’m finding the latter challenging, especially as a parent.

I remain super pissed that the taxes I've paid are funding harm instead of services, and then I need to do mutual aid to help people being harmed by the government I'm funding.

That's the inefficiency right there.
