Learn and share thoughts about improving road safety near Berkeley High and Washington Elementary on October 29. Come to an in-person workshop to talk to staff about proposed road changes near Berkeley High and Washington Elementary schools. These changes aim to increase safety for those on bikes and foot in the area.Over the past decade, there have been more than 450 crashes within a half-mile radius of Washington Elementary School. Of those, 46 led to severe injuries. Three people died.The key corridor is Martin Luther King Jr. Way, which separates the two schools. The proposed changes will also stretch to nearby streets.

Berkeley residents can enter monthly lottery to win rebate of up to $1,500 to buy an e-bike, making it even easier to bike around Berkeley. Berkeleyans can apply online for a monthly lottery to get $400 to $1,500 off the purchase of a new electric bicycle – with larger amounts helping lower income residents.The rebate will cover part of the cost of your new e-bike. Those selected will receive a personalized rebate code via email to buy an e-bike within 60 days from one of more than two dozen shops countywide – including five in Berkeley.This program is being offered by Ava Community Energy, the local electricity provider for virtually all residential and commercial accounts in Berkeley.

It’s 10pm. This marks the first time since November 2019 when there is no way to cross from Richmond to San Rafael without a car.

Thanks to the @mtcbata.bsky.social plan, endorsed by Caltrans & approved by the Bay Conservation & Development Commission there is now no trail, no shuttle, & no bus.
It’s 6am on October 27th, 2025, the first day of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge trail closure and free bike shuttle service.

Let us know in a virtual workshop or via email how to make it safer to bike in Berkeley and strengthen our network of calmed routes and roads.Your feedback would be incorporated into an update to our Bicycle Plan, a priority list of projects that increase safety and reduce stress for those on bikes as well as scooters, skateboards, and wheelchairs.Bicycle safety projects are never about bikes alone. They are often paired with elements to make it safer to walk or roll in a wheelchair while also increasing bike access to BART or AC Transit.

Claremont Avenue in Berkeley needs to be 1 lane each way to slow traffic down to a safer speed. The street doesn't get much traffic as the 2nd lane was originally a streetcar track.

Part of the Oakland section of Claremont has already been narrowed to 1 lane.
