This week, motorists have injured pedestrians and cyclists in three collisions along Rose Street.

Our statement:
Between September 21 and 24, motorists injured multiple pedestrians and cyclists in three separate collisions on Rose Street in North Berkeley, including an elderly pedestrian and a middle schooler on a scooter. This slew of three collisions over just four days underscores the ongoing traffic safety crisis on Rose and other high injury street across Berkeley. Last year Ben Brown was killed when a motorist hit him while he was walking across Rose. The City missed a key opportunity to add safety features on Rose Street when the road was repaved in 2023. Walk Bike Berkeley calls on the City to redouble its Vision Zero road safety efforts, including forming the long-delayed Vision Zero coordinating committee and streamlining delivery of basic traffic calming features on bicycle boulevards.

Our statement on the horrible traffic violence near Emerson Elementary
Walk Bike Berkeley is deeply upset that a motorist severely injured several people walking and biking and traumatized many more near Emerson Elementary School on September 16th. This horrible incidence of intentional traffic violence underscores that cars are dangerous death machines, particularly when operated by intoxicated and careless or aggressive people on streets that encourage high speeds. We hope the victims of these collisions heal quickly and that the City of Berkeley redoubles its efforts to protect the safety of people walking and biking.

Our statement on the pedestrian who was killed by a motorist on Claremont yesterday. 😢
Walk Bike Berkeley is deeply upset that a pedestrian was killed when a motorist hit them on Claremont Avenue on July 8th. This tragic, preventable death on a known high-injury street again highlights that the City must step up its Vision Zero efforts to eliminate severe and fatal collisions. We call on the City to make Claremont safe for people walking and biking - particularly students at John Muir Elementary - when the road is repaved in 2027, if not earlier.

Our statement on Elise Lusk’s tragic death.
Walk Bike Berkeley is deeply upset that Elise Lusk was killed when a motorist hit her as she walked across Ada Street at California Street on January 26. A trip to the grocery store should not end in tragedy. Ms. Lusk’s preventable death again highlights that the City must redouble its Vision Zero efforts to eliminate severe and fatal collisions. We call on the City to quickly install simple, proven measures to slow vehicle traffic and protect pedestrians in response to this and other recent collisions.

Our letter to @cityofberkeley.bsky.social requesting Vision Zero rapid response improvements at Rose and Josephine and a renewed effort to staff and support Public Works so we stop missing opportunities for safety improvements.
November 18, 2024 Dear Director Davis, Walk Bike Berkeley, Telegraph For People, Cal Berkeley Democrats, and Sunrise Bay Area are deeply upset by the death of beloved Berkeley community member Ben Brown, who was hit by a motorist as he was walking across Rose Street at Josephine on November 14. Mr. Brown was on his way home from nearby King Middle School, where he had just watched his 11-year old nephew play a soccer game. Consistent with Berkeley’s Vision Zero Action Plan, we urge the City to initiate a rapid response to this tragic, but preventable, collision. Please rapidly add quick-build safety features at this problem location on a high-injury street. Quick-build features could include painted crosswalks, daylighting, striping and posts to create bulb-outs, improved lighting, and a speed cushion or table. We appreciate that the City acknowledged this pedestrian fatality in a media release and encourage this as a standard practice for any future crash for which the Fatal Accident Investigation Team is called. Mr. Brown was hit on the segment of Rose Street that was repaved in 2023, highlighting again a missed safety improvement opportunity. At least four people have been injured while walking or biking at this intersection in the last ten years. Neighbors have made many requests to the CIty for safety improvements. Rose is recommended as a bicycle boulevard in the City’s Bicycle Plan. Yet, bicycle boulevard treatments that would have calmed vehicle traffic were not installed when it was repaved. As a consequence, vehicle speeds increased on Rose after repaving. Similarly, in 2016, Meg Schwarzman was nearly killed while biking on Fulton Street when a motorist ran her over from behind on a segment that had been repaved the year prior without the addition of a bike lane recommended in the Bicycle Plan. We understand that ongoing staffing challenges are a key reason why Rose and other streets did not receive safety upgrades last year and why the Vision Zero …

We appreciate Councilmember Hahn acknowledging yesterday’s tragic pedestrian fatality on Rose Street.

However, she has not shown a commitment to safe streets.

She was the ONLY councilmember that did not support Measure FF, which is designed to help prevent such collisions. 🧵
