A week ago we had an incident where there was a school bus with the STOP sign open and kids were getting on the bus and it was surrounded by ICE agents. And this is 7:20 in the morning and — just — you get that fight-or-flight response.” At first her 9-year-old was carrying her passport in her backpack; now it’s in her back pocket. “I have to prepare them for it if they get stopped,” she says. “I said, Do not engage. This is not the time to be cussing at anyone. But she said, Mom, if I create enough noise, my friends can get away.”

The justices of the Supreme Court knew perfectly well what the Trump administration is when it issued the order in Vasquez Perdomo. Kavanaugh knew when he wrote his concurrence. And his effort to dial back that damage by way of a late December footnote in an unrelated order has done absolutely nothing to blunt, let alone change, the behavior of the president, administration officials, and the people who work for them. These are Trump, Stephen Miller, and Noem's actions, but what is happening in Minneapolis - and what Noem admitted on Thursday - is the world the Supreme Court unleashed.

The video also allegedly shows the CBP agent saying “Do something, bitch” before shots were fired. In private Signal chats, the CBP agent boasted to other officers: “I fired 5 rounds and she had 7 holes. Put that in your book boys.” If he felt comfortable enough communicating that to fellow employees, it speaks to an irredeemable organizational culture.

I don’t know about you, but I find the endless lies and lying often to be the most infuriating and demoralizing part of the present situation. In the wake of this terrible killing in Minneapolis, my first thought, after the initial shock, anger, and sadness, was the knowledge that the next few days, months, weeks, and years would be filled with endless lying about what happened on the part of the regime and its stooges. This filled me, if not quite with despair, then at least with a strong sense of depression. I suppose it has something to do with my vocation as a historian, where I can accept tragedy and even evil as unavoidable parts of the human experience, so long as witness can be borne and the truth eventually discovered. It doesn’t help that I spend much of my time on a website dedicated to the destruction of truth and the dissemination of propaganda: Twitter or Elon Musk’s X. I do this for my work and to try to push back in my small way against that noxious climate, but I generally don’t recommend it. There is an unavoidable mental distortion that takes place in its topsy-turvy world: you either begin to accept the lies or, if you retain your moral center, you begin to believe that a critical mass or even majority of others have, and therefore you exist as an isolated or minor part of society. The result is demoralization. I liken being on there to working with radioactive or toxic waste, and I recommend people who don’t need to do it professionally to avoid it.

A Black man named Keith Porter was shot and killed by an ICE officer on New Year’s Eve.

Marimar Martinez was shot five times by an ICE officer in Chicago who went on to brag about leaving seven holes in her body.

This is not new but it is expanding.

The person shot in Minneapolis was driving a Honda SUV covered in bumper stickers. She wasn't a fucking domestic terrorist. She was a resident concerned about her neighbors being kidnapped.
