Gay, wannabe data scientist, former librarian. He/they
Inspired by @weregeek.bsky.social , I made beef stew last night. I have lots of recipes but this time I went with the classic interpretation from Serious Eats. Turned out amazing!

A few weeks ago I was talking politics with a local, highly straight, bartender.

All the sudden he said: “Well, I think a big part of the problem is that so many of the people who would’ve been our progressive leaders died of AIDS & can’t help us now.”

And I’ve thought about that every day since.

Bogomil and Malo Mogge from Kelly Link’s The Book of Love. Kai from Martha Wells’s Witch King. The Ladies and the Beast from Jared Pechaček’s The West Passage. All the horrifying things in the forest in Premee Mohamed’s The Butcher of the Forest.
What's your favourite monster/creature from literature? I'm thinking Tuunbaq from Dan Simmon's The Terror, the triffids from Wyndham's Day of the Triffids, the demon from M.R. James' Casting The Runes, Grendel, Pennywise, etc.

Had a frustration dream last night where I had to communicate with someone in French but couldn’t remember any vocabulary or grammar. Not happy that my dreams are feeling like school

I tried so hard to come up with an answer that wasn’t Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. There have been so many books that opened my eyes & changed my head around! But I don’t read any of them like clockwork at least once a year, so that’s my answer, at the end of it all: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

This is amazing!
Pretty sure bsky image compression will absolutely cook this, but I got really into plant phylogeny for the past few years and made a phylogenetic tree with basically every commonly known seed plant on it. Will be breaking it up into legible chunks in the replies if you would like to check it out

The absolute worst part about having just had surgery for me (aside from the pain) is that it’s starting to get cold and I can’t take a bath. That’s like, 90% of what I want to do when I’m cold!

Both recipes involved assembling and toasting blends of whole spices and resulted in absolutely mindblowing flavors. 100% worth it
Last night I made a Sri Lankan chicken curry (Kukul Mas Maluwa, recipe from NYT) and Bengali-spiced green beans (Panchphoran Green Beans, recipe from Serious Eats) and they were both absolutely amazing. No pics bc I suck.

Currently drinking a Leeward Negroni with Kota pandan liqueur in it. (Took a while bc I had to coconut-wash some Campari first.) It truly is a perfect cocktail.
I just got my hands on a new-to-me pandan liqueur named Kota and it’s the real deal! It captures the partly vegetal, partly comforting-custardy-spices profile of pandan *perfectly*. I need to try it in a Leeward Negroni ASAP

I really wanted pandan and passion fruit to work together, but the first time I tried it, they *really* didn’t. Then I found this recipe for a passion fruit colada with pandan, passion fruit, and coconut and that, it turns out, is the magical combination. Super sippable and fucking delicious.
Elements: Pandan Cocktails
Southeast Asian staple pandan lends its herbaceous and nutty notes to a variety of cocktails, from a Bamboo twist to a colada

I had a pretty minor surgery yesterday and I have since rediscovered how much it sucks being in pain all the time. I don’t like it! Not one little bit!!!

I block tiresome accounts on here. And yet I, too, am arguably a tiresome account. This hypocrisy will not stand.

Sam Sifton’s Pan-Roasted Chicken in Cream Sauce is the most delicious dish I personally know how to make. The cognac, Madeira, tarragon, and mushrooms combine to infuse the sauce with incredible flavor—just make sure to cook all the liquid down enough. It’s a bit fiddly but not at all hard.

POSTER: In my post I invented the Don’t Misunderstand the Torment Nexus Metaphor as a cautionary tale

CTO: At long last, I have misunderstood the Torment Nexus Metaphor from the classic post Don't Misunderstand The Torment Nexus Metaphor
"Torment Nexus" comes from this tweet and is often used now to describe the kind of negative experiences you can have with social networks, like getting dogpiled or harassed or being pushed into conflict
