Gay, wannabe data scientist, former librarian. He/they
Inspired by @weregeek.bsky.social , I made beef stew last night. I have lots of recipes but this time I went with the classic interpretation from Serious Eats. Turned out amazing!

I just got my hands on a new-to-me pandan liqueur named Kota and it’s the real deal! It captures the partly vegetal, partly comforting-custardy-spices profile of pandan *perfectly*. I need to try it in a Leeward Negroni ASAP

I made a riff on The Witch on the Beach that’s a bit easier. I’m calling it La Strega sulla Spiaggia.

1½ oz London dry gin
1½ oz Chinola passion fruit liqueur
½ oz Liquore Strega
Soda water to taste

Garnish: a sprig of basil

Stir ingredients in a glass with ice. Garnish w/ the basil sprig. Enjoy!

Now I need to rewatch that one episode of Wakakozake about skin-on salmon!

This the Witch on the Beach, and it’s frankly amazing. Gin, Liquore Strega, lemon, and passion fruit all meld together in a bright, refreshing highball. Recipe below.

Just made the “Yellow Cocktail” that I found in David Lebovitz’s Drinking French. I was skeptical when I saw it’s made with Suze but it’s actually exquisite and perfectly balanced! Very drinkable.

Made passion fruit pâte de fruit today! It was way easier than I was expecting, and the results are delicious. (I used Andrea Geary’s recipe from America’s Test Kitchen, in case you’re interested.)

Kludged together two recipes to make this cardamom-roll focaccia and it might be better than the apple-fritter kind I made a couple weeks ago! omnomnomnomnomnom

I have made the truly horrifying discovery that limoncello tastes amazing mixed with gin (in this case, Empress 1908 Indigo Gin).
October 8, 2025 at 1:27 AM
Six weeks later and I just decanted the limoncello! It’s smooth, sweet, and bursting with lemon flavor—and with nary a hint of bitterness, thanks to the amazing serrated peeler I used to remove the zest from the lemons cleanly.

Made Lacey Ostermann’s tear and share apple fritter focaccia tonight and it was the bomb. The recipe’s not in Lacey’s cookbook but I still blame @mostlybree.kitrocha.com for this somehow

Age yourself with a film you saw in a cinema as a kid.

Just finished Hello Sunshine, a horror graphic novel by @keezyyoung.bsky.social and it’s super good! I’ve been looking forward to reading it for months and it did not disappoint.

Just finished Mr Collins in Love by @leewelchwriter.bsky.social and I really liked it! A quietly lovely little love story between an autistic parson in Regency England and his gardener.

Lilac beverage unlocked!

(Usually I would call this a kind of Negroni bianco but in this case I guess it’s a Negroni lilla?)

Hmmm. This was tough. But I think I would go with

Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen
The Long, Dark Tea-Time of the Soul by Douglas Adams
and
Arabel’s Raven by Joan Aiken

More garlic-butter-and-cheese focaccia, because it was so good the first time. Our D&D group absolutely devoured it, so it’s not just me who likes it! #breadsky

Loaded Baked Potato Focaccia! It was good, and we devoured it, but I’m not sure all the potato slices were as cooked as I wanted. Probably my fault for overlapping them.

This recipe was from Lacey Ostermann’s cookbook as well.

Oh wow, that is nice! I split the Campari (as written), so it’s a little sweeter but definitely not too sweet, and the banana flavor complements everything nicely. I’ll have to try it by splitting the vermouth instead (as suggested in a comment), see how that compares. Thanks for sharing this!

My first bake from Lacey Ostermann’s book: Garlic Butter & Cheese–Stuffed Focaccia! I neglected to verify what Lacey considers “room temperature” and massively overproved the dough, but it still came out delicious. H/t once again to @mostlybree.kitrocha.com for the cookbook rec. #breadsky

Brown butter peach… cobbler? cake? other?

One of the worst-written recipes I’ve ever encountered, but the results are suitably peachy and brown-buttery.

- Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk (Poland)

Someone already beat me to this one, but I had to include it. Pretty sure I read it on the suggestion of someone on Bluesky, in fact.

- The Unworthy by Agustina Bazterrica (Argentina)

A difficult but rewarding (& short) read.

I have multiple focaccia and bread recipes I love, but I’m still excited about this cookbook. Garlic butter and cheese focaccia??? Loaded baked potato focaccia???? What is this wizardry
September 4, 2025 at 12:22 AM
Wow, this is delicious! Also very balanced—the crème de cacao plays a supporting role, but a very important one.
