An old spy in a hurry
Watching THE THIN MAN for the first time in decades, and the bit where Nick and the lieutenant trick Nora into getting into the taxi without them is making me wonder if seeing this as a kid would have been the first time I'd ever heard of Grant's Tomb.

I may or may not be breaking my fast at three in the afternoon on the day after Christmas with a few slices of French toast left over from Christmas brunch.

I guess if they're rebranding that will reduce the number of people like myself who walk into a store called "Games Workshop" thinking it would be, you know, a game store that offered more than one game.
I wouldn't have thought Warhammer could support an entire store, but I went in and looked around, and they literally sell nothing but Warhammer minis, Warhammer rulebooks, Warhammer novels, and endless painting and finishing gear.

We watched the first half of Fellowship last night, and the scene with the close-up on Gandalf's expression of hopeful relief when Frodo says he doesn't see anything on the ring, but then his face sags when the writing appears.

Gandalf, quietly under his breath: "fuck"
The Lord of The Rings movies were rated PG-13. By current rules that means that each film could contain one use of the word "Fuck". Which line are you altering to insert the most useful swear word?

"I can't carry it for you, but I can Fucking carry you"

Decided for some reason to start watching highlights of the Lions-Vikings game and is it my imagination or is spotting the football all done on vibes these days?

Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Tiny Tim was to remember that distant Christmas when his father's employer took him to discover a goose.

Shane MacGowan on meeting Bob Dylan & getting along with him because he asked about Sam Peckinpah and Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid instead of music:

The English lyrics to O Tannenbaum sound like someone's making them up on the spot.

The amazing thing about Christmas music is that Mahalia Jackson's rendition of Silver Bells can come on within a track or two of Dwight Yoakam's version, and they're basically two completely different songs.

I'm at the traditional stage of Christmas Eve where everyone else has gone up to turn in for the night, and I've got a handful of gifts left to wrap, but I'm putting them off to chill and listen to Christmas music.

"Santa Claus in a Union Suit" but not the kind of union suit you might think.
One of the earliest-ever modern portrayals of Santa Claus features him gifting Union soldiers with a jumping-jack doll of Jefferson Davis dangling from a noose - as drawn by political cartoonist Thomas Nast.

Was it Terry Pratchett who wrote "sin is treating people as things"? Probably as sound a definition as I've heard yet, I think.
“Like Prime, but with human beings.”

I had this same experience. I would ride my bike everywhere around San Diego, and this tape spent a lot of time in my walkman.

Thread 🧵
a lot of people don't realize that Christmas carols and traditions are actually folk memories of suppressed pre-Christian events, namely the end of the Third Age and the Fall of Sauron.

Because we are renting from another church, our Christmas Eve lessons and carols service was this morning. It was a nice surprise to see a Sunday morning level turnout, even with the heavy rain.
