My doomer-worry about AI is not that the LLMs become omnipotent and take over the world but that the wealthy and powerful use it as a means to consolidate power and marginalize or lay off skilled workers and also everything about our technological and political and social life gets worse

I don't think you know how project managers work if you think AI is gonna deal with these clients

Wow who could have ever foreseen a white woman using tears to manipulate power! I, for one, am stunned.

(Yes it’s good character detail.)

So if I have this straight, the airspace around El Paso got shut down for ten days because the military got spooked and fired up the Annihilator Ray 3000 and it was a party balloon

Even as elites abandon any pretense of giving a shit ... climate change is accelerating.
Scientists thought they understood global warming. Then the past three years happened.
The fastest warming period since 1880 occurred in the past 30 years, according to a Washington Post analysis of NASA data.

The rapid and haphazard forced introduction of AI into every field, every industry, every sphere of human activity in such a short time is already fucking everything up on a massive scale and, I suspect, far more than we realize. When you degrade every part of a complex system at once, what happens?

For real, I am so tired of explaining to colleagues that all it does is pattern-match. That Apple paper showing its reasoning conks out after about 37000k tokens? Is because humans *rarely write out every detail of long-form reasoning* because we don't have to and it's boring. No examples.
Also I’m sorry but I don’t think this is Claude developing a personality or ethical values. It is *simulating* those things because that is what humans value and reward. The programmers are falling for their own Clever Hans trick!

Bunch of fuckin invertebrate losers on the committee.

My pov is that I’ve not needed to integrate any of the AI that people are usually talking about (like the generative ones that produce writing and visuals like art and video) and I’ve been doing pretty well without any of it. That’s all it is for me. I don’t need the kind of help they’re offering.

I am exhausted by AI hype. AI doomerism is 100% more AI hype.

A *lot* of harm is being done in the name of AI.

If that harm is too hard to keep looking at, then you get this kind of nonsense:
I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.

I’m actually blocking all the men who weirdly want to argue with me about ai not being categorically junk because I’m on the record about the meaningful distinctions and have demonstrated I know the difference between marketing and scientific processes that use what we now (blithely) call AI

Really needed to hear this today 💖🤟
The hardest part of setting boundaries is that you're gonna feel like the bad guy, and for your own self-preservation you just gotta join The Dark Side.

You AREN'T the bad guy, but the people who want to cross boundaries are certainly going to try to make you feel like you are.

Please don't think anything is back to normal in Minnesota. Nothing is normal.

I know we’re strong. Don’t know if it’s enough.

If you don't live here, your Minnesota friends may tell you that it's going to be okay but I think a lot of that is them being nice so you won't worry.

It's bad here.
JUST IN: Authorities are at the scene of a multi-vehicle crash in St. Paul that's believed to have involved federal immigration agents.

I don’t casually compare stuff to China’s Cultural Revolution but this reminds me of 八个样板戏

“Art” created under authoritarianism will always be rotten because creativity is killed at the very inception, so that the work is devoid of beauty, wit, and anything else that makes art great and engaging.

Tbh, I’m glad there aren’t people writing about Grocery Outlet, it’s my favorite. And I don’t want it to be super popular, because i hate crowds.

The one I go to is in the same mini mall as Villa’s Tacos 😎🤟

"Art helps us to know one another better and to know ourselves more honestly. And it helps us to process our awe and terror at the world and our existence. It’s why those with authoritarian impulses always want to control it, to limit what it shows us, and to silence its practitioners."
