Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

At the Microsoft MVP summit, @kclemson.bsky.social, Raymond Chen and I did a talk consisting of stories from the past 40 or so years of Microsoft history.

Unfortunately ir wasn't recorded.

This fall, we recreated it on video to be shared, and I'm so happy we did.

Bought tickets for Billy Madison, but snuck in to the back of Pulp Fiction instead - right during the gimp scene. 0/10 do not recommend this.
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

"genuine appreciation is somehow considered less intellectual than criticism" is such a word

the number of times I've said I enjoyed something and IMMEDIATELY, like a starting pistol just went off, someone gallops in to do "too bad you are simply Not Smart Enough to have spotted this list of flaws"
It goes into that weird thing that genuine appreciation is somehow considered less intellectual than criticism but everybody is getting trained to be such a cynical unfeeling asshole nowadays that I find the smartest people often are the “hell yeah cool song/drawing/story/video” people

I’m working on a new vibe coding project: an app that uses AI to generate CSS+HTML visualizations from a prompt/reference image, and then has a simple UX for easily modifying the visualizations yourself, or requesting changes from the AI.

Testing is going well.

If I made a gift guide, it would have the most boring things on it... but they'd be really freaking useful.

Like these belts, which are washable, and I leave one on every pair of jeans I wear. It's sooooo handy to not have to unbuckle a belt to use the restroom: www.amazon.com/dp/B07QDL2238

last week i remembered that macOS lets you set your own icons and that *I* have the power to delegitimize the professionalism of the software that runs on my machine, so here's a thread of the 16 new icons i've made so far

i really forgot how fun it was to just sit down and make art for myself :')
