On this day 55 years ago, blubber went boom at the Oregon Coast.

That's when officials made the legendary decision to blow up a dead whale.

Here's a look back at the explosive piece of Oregon lore with a 2020 story by OPB's Tiffany Camhi written ahead of the whale of a tale's 50th anniversary.
‘It was like a blubber snowstorm’: Why Oregon blew up a whale in 1970
The exploding whale is a piece of Oregon lore that just won’t go away. It’s one of those real-life stories that just sounds too strange to be real.

I once got the flu during college winter break and spent most of it napping with The History Channel on in the background. The fever dreams about defending Queen Hatshepsut’s dynasty were interesting but maybe not historically accurate.
If you're wondering whether or not to get a flu shot, I didn't get one in time, and I just had a fever dream where I was in the Drew Carey Show because several days ago I was on the Wikipedia page for the Drew Carey Show. You don't have to do this to yourself.

True story: Went to the farmers market this weekend. Carrying out my vegan cream cheese and ethically sourced seasonal squash, I was offered a free tarot reading by a couple of free spirits of unspecific gender.

That might sound like a nightmare scenario to some, but in Portland we call it Sunday.

Here’s a little news break for your social feed. There’s nothing like a crisp autumn morning in Portland, Oregon.

OPB captured the Rose City sunrise by drone on Tuesday, Oct. 7, showcasing the Willamette River, bridges, skyline and view of Mount Hood.

“War ravaged Portland.”

I have seen things you baristas wouldn’t believe.

Attack kayaks on fire off the coast of Mill Ends Park. I watched powdered Voodoo doughnuts glitter in the dark near the Pittock Mansion gate. All these moments will be lost in time.

just sipping on my coffee in my city of portland, and thinking about this post
yeah someone here was like "sarah go on tv!! how often does history happen on your doorstep!!" and I counted on my fingers and went "hmmm... like once every two to four years?"
a coup breaking out in South Korea while she's (I assume) visiting family in Seoul for the holidays and specifically at that exact moment very drunk does in fact track perfectly with Sarah Jeong's career tbh lol, this does seem to be the kind of shit that just happens to her
