Welcome to Void Week, where everything is made up and the points don't matter.

Sigh. Yeah.
Kids these days.

Nothing says Christmas like boss-adjacent dropping a big project on your doorstep (due 1/1) and then conveniently disappearing until the New Year to avoid any questions. 🙃

Pour one out for everybody who still has to work this week 😮‍💨

First day of winter sure catapults us straight into the Void Times.

It's been a really rough year, but in July I started lifting again twice a week and I'm really proud of how well I've stuck with it.

What little victory did you have in 2025?

So one of the reasons I've been sharing the progress and snippets for this WIP is to make it very very clear I'm not using genAI, because that accusation is going to come at all of us.
To be clear, I don't use genAI for any part of my writing process.
Oops, my finger slipped and now I've opened a doc for the rewrite.
I'm curious if this will be just as wild a ride as the initial draft 👀
And 73k and exactly 6 weeks later, I have reached "The End."
That was a wild journey, folks.

Update: new laptop on the way.
I splurged on one that is known for being highly repairable, so hopefully I won't have to do this song and dance again for a loooooooong time
My laptop seems to be behaving, maybe I don't need a replace--

Still need a gift for that friend/family member/mortal enemy?
Why not get them a book?

PSA: The kids are now saying "tesla, no tes-backs" instead of "punch buggy, no punch backs," and I am not sure how to feel about this.

The publisher's marketing team should absolutely be utilizing those venues, because yeah, unfortunately, video is where a lot of readers are
But authors should be allowed to do whatever they do best, which is--weirdly!!--most often words-based
I honestly don't understand why people are mad at Jamelle for this unless they didn't read his thread.

He's not wrong. Currently if you want the best chance to influence a lot of people it's not gonna be on bluesky.

But even he said pretty clearly IF YOU WANT.

I don't so I'm not in that post.
i'm still getting angry replies about it too. absolutely furious. you'd think i walked up to some of these people and spit directly in their mouths

Coworker: As one the few remaining anti AI holdouts on our team, I feel like we're at that point in the zombie movie where everyone else has already been bitten.
Me: Yeah, and they keep trying to convince us that eating brains is good, actually.

Pumped by K.M. Neuhold (January 2nd) I’m just a nerd, standing in front of a bench press, asking it not to humiliate me in front of my gym crush I’ve never walked into a gym on purpose in my life, and I’m not sure which part is more shocking, the massive beefcake who immediately challenges me to arm wrestle or the fact that I kind of want to come back.

Before I scoot, feel free to give me some book recs with your favorite bi characters. Romance or SFF.

I, FOR SOME REASON, think I could use some new comfort reads for the next bit.

Bring back webrings!
aside: what we really need to be better at for the sustainability of writer communities is a communal indie web that is not bound to social media. Build webrings! Write newsletters in reply to your friends' newsletters! Be better at not only maintaining our own digital spaces but opening their doors
I will say re: the current discourse that I don't think OP was selling text social media short, but also as someone who wants to make a lot of video essays and only hasn't because of a lack of Action Points, there's high virtue in any forward-facing medium, offset only by where the audiences are.

Loved this essay. Such a good reminder that words written by real humans may seem simple, but often have depth; whereas slop by genAI may seem deep, but is simple.
I wrote this, a long analysis of a single line of Shakespeare and what it’s doing. How good writing is an ethical practice. And my continuing attempts to work out what it is that I’m spotting when I look at a piece of text and go “oh that was written by AI.”
